Propulsion HIL Systems Engineer

Stellantis•Auburn Hills, MI

About The Position

Stellantis’ Propulsion organization is seeking a Propulsion HIL Systems Engineer for the Propulsion System HIL team. The role develops and works with Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulators, requiring knowledge of HIL simulator hardware, ECU electrical interface definition, and harness development. The engineer serves as the primary interface between the HIL development team and external software, controls, and calibration teams. They collaborate with cross-functional ECU hardware, systems, software, controls, plant modeling, and calibration engineers to define HIL requirements, assess impacts, establish simulator setups for specified vehicle configurations, and resolve simulation environment and integration issues. The role also includes triage and troubleshooting during commissioning of HIL test properties. The position calls for a strong team player with systems-focused, interdisciplinary experience across ICE, transmission, electrical, hybrid, and BEV systems, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with global teams across North America, EMEA, APAC, and LATAM. Additional work includes benchmarking, evaluating new HIL technologies, and collaborating on processes, methodologies, and tools.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Electronics Engineering, or a related degree field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in electrical/electronics, hardware, software, or controls.
  • Knowledge and experience with ICE, transmission, vehicle dynamics, electrical/electronic systems, and electric and hybrid systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with HIL systems, including dSPACE, ETAS, or NI systems.
  • Hands-on experience with dSPACE Scalexio simulators, harness design and implementation, and electrical loads.
  • Experience with HIL electrical/wiring harness and load box design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with model-based development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Knowledge of CAN stack, SPI, LIN, and flash bootloader integration.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic management tools such as CANalyzer and CANoe.
  • Knowledge of simulation tools such as CarMaker or ASM.
  • Knowledge or experience with UDS and XCP protocols.
  • Familiarity with trace capture, data acquisition, and analysis tools such as ETAS INCA.
  • Experience with HIL testing, vehicle integration, and validation.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Experience working cross-functionally.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Seven years of working experience in MIL/SIL/xIL development, testing, and delivery of test properties.
  • Detailed knowledge of ICE, hybrid, and BEV applications.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle dynamics and specific simulation software.
  • Good working experience with dSPACE simulators, hardware design, and implementation.
  • Experience working within an Agile or Scrum framework.
  • Experience in test automation.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment with minimal effect on productivity.
  • Understanding of embedded software development.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary interface between the HIL development team and software, controls, and calibration teams.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional ECU hardware, systems, software, controls, plant modeling, and calibration engineers on HIL requirements and impact analysis.
