About The Position

General Motors is seeking a Virtual Propulsion Analysis Engineer responsible for applying advanced analysis and simulation tools to support propulsion system architecture development, with emphasis on optimizing vehicle energy consumption (EV range/fuel economy) and performance. This role involves partnering with Propulsion System Architects and cross-functional engineering teams to design, evaluate, and refine propulsion concepts that meet or exceed customer expectations and program requirements.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • 2+ years’ experience in propulsion engineering
  • Proficient in MATLAB and Simulink capability
  • Experience with analysis/simulation tools, such as: AMEsim, GT Suite, Unified Model (Verde) or other industry standard energy consumption platforms
  • Understanding and application of engineering theory and principles of operation for mechanical/electrical mechanisms
  • Knowledge of engineering mechanics, physics, and fundamental understanding of engines, transmissions, drive units, electric motors, power electronics and battery technology
  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals
  • Independent thinking and strong teamwork skills are needed to succeed

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in testing, development, calibration pertaining to energy consumption and performance
  • Experience with system analysis and applying systems engineering methods
  • Experience in powertrain and/or vehicle controls
  • Knowledge of applied optimization and design of experiments

Responsibilities

  • Lead analysis/simulation to define Propulsion System and corresponding component requirements to meet energy and performance VTS & regulatory targets.
  • Conduct analysis/simulation to quantify effects of advanced propulsion technologies (engine, hybridization, electrification) on vehicle energy consumption, performance, and drivability for various propulsion system configurations.
  • Support product teams and leadership in defining next generation propulsion systems with analytical evaluation of the proposed architectures & technologies (ICE, HEV, BEV).
  • Work collaboratively with propulsion performance engineers and component hardware design teams to develop balanced requirements.
  • Lead small team of global analysis engineers to ensure analysis plan deliverables meet required virtual analysis plan timing.
  • Lead the energy consumption, performance analysis to support system project deliverables and conduct trade studies to evaluate design alternatives (quick studies).
  • Present analytical results to project/program team and leadership.
  • Development of new analytical methodologies and standard work procedures.
