Gen Re currently offers an excellent opportunity for Property Treaty Underwriter to work in the Regional & Specialty Treaty based in our Stamford office. This is a hybrid role.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant underwriting experience in insurance/reinsurance industry.
  • Strong property background.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work calmly and effectively under time constraints.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Self-starter and ability to multi-task.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, e.g. Excel.
  • Reinsurance contract knowledge.

Nice To Haves

  • Actuarial or strong quantitative background is a plus.
  • CPCU/ARe designations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, underwrite, price and structure new and renewal treaty business consistent with General Re’s risk appetite and profit margin expectations.
  • Effectively explain findings and positions to both internal stakeholders as well as external clients.
  • Handle commercial and personal lines of business with strong property background.
  • Assess and analyze exposure to loss.
  • Utilize primary insurance policy form knowledge.
  • Understand primary insurance rate making.
  • Apply reinsurance knowledge encompassing treaty reinsurance background or facultative underwriting.
  • Understand treaty pricing tools and concepts.
  • Analyze insurance company financial statements and their relation to reinsurance purchasing decisions.
  • Assess and price per-risk property business, including personal, commercial, and industrial risks.
  • Assess large risks and attritional loss exposure.
  • Perform per-risk technical analysis, including risk profile analysis and evaluation of construction, occupancy, and protection.
  • Analyze natural catastrophe exposure across key perils, including named windstorm / hurricane, earthquake, severe convective storm, wildfire, flood, and winter storms.
  • Work with various treaty structures, including per-risk and catastrophe excess-of-loss, working and clash layers, quota share, and surplus treaties.
  • Apply knowledge of property-specific treaty terms such as occurrence definitions, hours clauses, reinstatements and reinstatement premiums, event limits, and inuring reinsurance.
  • Utilize property pricing methods, including exposure rating and experience rating, and blend catastrophe model output with underwriting judgment.
  • Understand insurance marketplace and company reinsurance buying motivations.
  • Participate in opportunity generations and pre-qualification process.
  • Work with client teams to build business opportunities, explain reinsurance structures and pricing, and articulate value of General Re in buying decisions.
  • Play an advisory role to clients by sharing underwriting expertise.
  • Effectively communicate positions, look at alternatives and work through issues while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Proactively work to anticipate and solve issues that hinder a successful business outcome.
  • Make suggestions that build business and/or improve processes.
