About The Position

The Property Accounting team at Essex works directly with the Operations team to manage the financial activities of each residential community. The goal of the team is to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting. The Senior Property Accountant position is responsible for the preparation of bank reconciliations, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations and income and expense analytics. A candidate should have attention to detail and strong analytical, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in accounting or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience required.
  • Experience with public accounting firm preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to provide efficient, timely, reliable and courteous service to customers.
  • Ability to effectively present information.
  • Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret documents.
  • Ability to solve problems involving several options in situations.
  • Requires intermediate analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Decisions made with thorough knowledge of procedures and company policies to achieve set results and deadlines.
  • Responsible for setting own project deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review regular journal entries as they relate to the month end close.
  • Review financial statement variances during month-end and ensure that accounting transactions are complete, and balances are accurate.
  • Have a solid understanding of sub ledger data and its impact on the financial statements.
  • Review the accuracy and completeness of monthly rent postings.
  • Reconcile and complete balance sheet account reconciliations, including ensuring that outstanding items are cleared in a timely manner.
  • Communicate professionally with lead operational management.
  • Work closely with accounting management on process improvement projects.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests as needed.
  • Assist with the preparation of accounting & management reports for executive distribution.
  • Assist with other ad hoc requests and projects as needed.
  • Assist with annual budgeting as needed.
  • Coordinate, direct and guide the team to research items and to properly explain variances.
  • Review and prepare bank reconciliations in a timely manner, including reporting any unusual bank transactions, invalid disbursements, withdrawals, transfers, other issues and policy violations.
  • Ensure the clearing of checks and deposits and receipts on a daily basis.
