About The Position

The City of Charlotte is seeking a Projects Coordinator for the Housing & Neighborhood Services Department. This role focuses on creating vibrant, diverse neighborhoods through various service areas including Community Engagement, Code Enforcement, Housing Services, CharMeck311, and the Office of Youth Opportunities. The Neighborhood Services Projects Coordinator will manage a portfolio of place-based projects aimed at supporting neighborhood stability, economic mobility, and community revitalization. This position involves project management, cross-departmental coordination, stakeholder engagement, and data-informed planning to guide projects from conception to implementation. The role requires collaboration with residents, businesses, community organizations, City departments, and other partners to align investments with local needs and deliver measurable community benefits.

Requirements

  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, schedules, budgets, and deliverables simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of neighborhood revitalization, community development, place-based investment, economic mobility, public-sector programs, or related fields, or the ability to learn quickly.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to assess neighborhood conditions, synthesize qualitative and quantitative information, identify risks and opportunities, and develop practical recommendations.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise reports and presentations and explain technical or complex information to varied audiences.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and community conversations with diverse participants using diplomacy, active listening, sound judgment, and sensitivity to community context.
  • Experience or familiarity with project tracking, data management, reporting, mapping, or information management systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment, exercise initiative, manage competing priorities, and follow through on commitments.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with seven years of relevant work experience, OR an associate degree with five years of relevant work experience, OR a bachelor’s degree with three years of relevant work experience, OR a master’s degree with one year of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, community development, economic development, business administration, real estate, construction management, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three or more years of experience in project or program management, neighborhood revitalization, community development, local government, infrastructure, economic development, or a related field.
  • Experience managing or coordinating place-based projects involving multiple stakeholders, public investments, community engagement, contracts, grants, or capital improvements.
  • Familiarity with urban design, neighborhood planning, geographic information systems (GIS), data analysis, public-sector procurement, or grant-funded programs is a plus.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the coordination and management of a portfolio of neighborhood-focused projects by developing scopes, work plans, schedules, milestones, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Work closely with internal staff, consultants, contractors, community partners, and other stakeholders to move projects forward in a timely manner while maintaining strong customer service.
  • Manage place-based initiatives that may include neighborhood revitalization, public-realm and infrastructure improvements, placemaking, community facilities, commercial corridor support, neighborhood stabilization, capacity-building, and other projects intended to improve quality of life and expand access to opportunity.
  • Build and maintain effective partnerships with residents, neighborhood and business organizations, community-based organizations, property owners, institutions, private-sector partners, and local, state, and federal agencies involved in project planning and implementation.
  • Plan and support meaningful community engagement throughout the project lifecycle, including public meetings, focus groups, presentations, stakeholder briefings, and other outreach activities.
  • Document feedback and incorporate community input into project strategies and decisions as appropriate.
  • Monitor project implementation through regular coordination, site visits, progress reviews, and documentation of project status.
  • Track risks, dependencies, timelines, milestones, and deliverables and identify or escalate issues requiring resolution.
  • Coordinate project administration, including procurement and contracting activities, review and processing of invoices, budget and expenditure tracking, maintenance of project files, and compliance with applicable City policies, funding requirements, and record-keeping standards.
  • Prepare project reports, presentations, briefing materials, and status updates for department leadership, elected officials, community stakeholders, and partner organizations.
  • Communicate project goals, progress, challenges, and outcomes in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Support problem solving and implementation of community-led solutions by connecting neighborhoods and partners to appropriate programs, technical assistance, funding opportunities, and City or external resources.
  • Research best practices and innovative approaches to guide solutions to complex neighborhood challenges.
  • Participate on interdepartmental teams, collaborative boards, committees, and special initiatives as assigned.
  • Perform other related project management and community development work as required.
