Project Manager (High-End Residential Construction)

Hurst ConstructionKansas City, MO
$37 - $41Onsite

About The Position

Hurst Construction is a craft-focused custom construction company specializing in high-end residential work in the Kansas City and Lawrence areas. We operate our own cabinet shop, Blind Rabbet, in-house, with a team of approximately fifteen people across field and shop operations. We do not competitively bid; clients hire us for our quality of build. This means projects are scheduled to be met, not survived, and issues with cabinetry and millwork are resolved internally. We offer a structured 40-hour work week, with overtime being uncommon, emphasizing a healthy work-life balance. The Project Manager role is hands-on, focusing on owning the build from start to finish, managing the schedule, budget, client relationships, and design intent with a strong team supporting them. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about building and possess strong leadership, organizational, and collaborative skills.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience, ideally in detail finish work.
  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, with the ability to adapt it when necessary.
  • Ability to read and understand sets of drawings and the design intent behind them.
  • Skill in asking relevant questions to clarify design and project details.
  • Ability to translate drawings and design intent into a actionable plan.
  • Proven leadership experience, including making difficult decisions and guiding a team.
  • Strong organizational and foresight skills, thinking ahead in the project timeline.
  • A team-oriented approach, valuing collaboration and the best answer regardless of source.
  • A genuine passion for building, demonstrated through personal projects or interests outside of work.
  • Willingness to commit to a scheduled 40-hour work week.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in high-end residential construction.
  • Experience with custom cabinetry and millwork.
  • Experience working with an in-house cabinet shop.

Responsibilities

  • Own the build from handoff through closeout.
  • Manage the details of the construction, understanding the design intent beyond just the drawings.
  • Drive site details and ensure subcontractors have necessary information.
  • Manage the project schedule and ensure it is met.
  • Oversee budget performance against a fixed fee.
  • Maintain the client relationship through regular, in-person interaction.
  • Manage the relationship with designers and architects, bringing the design to fruition.
  • Ask clarifying questions when design or details are unclear, rather than proceeding without full understanding.
  • Manage subcontractors, procurement, and material flow.
  • Keep the internal team moving forward efficiently without burning excessive hours.

Benefits

  • Scheduled 40-hour work week.
  • Uncommon overtime.
  • Opportunity to work on a small number of projects in depth.
  • Internal resolution of cabinetry and millwork issues.
  • Supportive team environment.
  • Competitive salary based on experience ($37-$41/hour).
