About The Position

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. Reporting to the Manager, Program and Customer Connection, we are looking for a Project Manager, Customer Connections to facilitate the delivery of customer connection projects in accordance with the AESO’s Connection Process. You will be responsible for the daily coordination of internal project resources, market participants and transmission facility owners. In addition, you will be accountable for project planning and scheduling, communication, risk mitigation, decision making while ensuring appropriate customer support and meeting committed project objectives and milestones. As the Project Manager, you may be the sole lead on a project or part of a cross-functional team on a larger project and are responsible for the team and task management required for project delivery. You are required to make decisions on behalf of the project and the AESO. Your role requires a consultative approach to decision-making, which includes identifying risks and gathering input from both internal and external stakeholders. As the leader of a project team, you manage daily team priorities, collaboration, team dynamics, and project delivery performance.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree (Engineering, Science, Business, or other related field), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10 years of industry experience, including 5 years of hands-on project management experience, preferably in utilities
  • A solid understanding of project delivery methodologies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite to produce project deliverables.

Nice To Haves

  • Project Management certification (PMP) is considered an asset.
  • Experience in a regulated industry, preferably utilities and specifically electricity transmission development, is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Confirm project scope with the Customer, ensuring all required information has been received.
  • Establish project scope, schedule, resource and communication requirements.
  • Determine required stakeholders.
  • Develops risk management plans.
  • Direct and manage work activities required for the project.
  • Ensure all aspects of quality are achieved for project deliverables.
  • Effectively communicate with all stakeholders for input, decisions, and updates.
  • Manage project priorities and delivery process checkpoint gates.
  • Identify and resolve project issues.
  • Manage projects in accordance with legislation, regulations and rules that govern AESO activities.
  • Validate project progress and quality.
  • Maintain complete, accurate and up-to-date information about project status, schedule, accountabilities, and outcomes.
  • Validate and control project scope and changes, including schedule changes.
  • Monitor project resourcing commitments; identify and work to resolve resource conflicts.
  • Control of project communications with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify and mitigate risks, maintaining and monitoring an up-to-date risk register, including project interdependencies.
  • Report on project progress, risks and other updates to the Program Manager/Director, Customer Grid Access.
  • Close out of projects as required by AESO processes.
  • Identify and implement project management and delivery improvements with the Program Support Team.
