About The Position

SCS Engineers is seeking an experienced Project Engineer – Solid Waste to join its established South Florida solid waste practice. This position may be based from the firm’s Coconut Creek or West Palm Beach office under a hybrid work arrangement. This is an excellent opportunity for a civil, environmental, or geotechnical engineer who wants to expand their technical capabilities, manage projects, gain client-facing experience, and contribute to infrastructure that protects communities and the environment. The selected engineer will support municipal and private-sector clients across projects involving landfills, landfill gas systems, composting facilities, stormwater management, industrial wastewater, air quality, environmental compliance, permitting, design, construction, operations, and environmental monitoring. The role combines office-based engineering, field assignments, project coordination, technical reporting, quality control, and client interaction. It is ideally suited for an engineer who wants hands-on responsibility and a clear path toward increased project-management and technical leadership responsibilities.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
At least five years of relevant civil, environmental, geotechnical, or solid waste engineering experience.
Active Professional Engineer registration or the ability to obtain PE registration within six months of employment.
Experience preparing engineering calculations, technical reports, plans, specifications, or permit applications.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, laboratory results, field data, and regulatory requirements.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other software commonly used in environmental consulting.
Strong written, verbal, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple assignments while meeting project deadlines.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
Willingness and ability to perform fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions.
Ability to travel approximately 20%, including occasional overnight travel.
Valid driver’s license and driving record in good standing.

Nice To Haves

Professional Engineer registration in Florida or the ability to obtain Florida reciprocity.
Consulting experience within the solid waste or environmental engineering industry.
Experience with one or more of the following: Landfill design and permitting, Landfill gas collection and control systems, Landfill gas management, Air-quality compliance, Landfill infrastructure, Leachate-management systems, Stormwater design or permitting, Industrial wastewater, Construction quality assurance, CQA, Geosynthetics, Landfill liner, Final cover system, Environmental monitoring, Groundwater monitoring, Drilling oversight, Environmental sampling, Subtitle D Landfill, FDEP.
Experience managing project tasks, schedules, budgets, or junior staff.
Proficiency with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, or related engineering software.

Familiarity with Florida environmental permitting and regulatory agencies.
Experience reviewing laboratory data and preparing compliance-monitoring reports.
Interest in progressing into a project-management or technical-leadership role.

Responsibilities

Support the planning, design, permitting, construction, and operation of solid waste facilities and related infrastructure.
Prepare engineering calculations, design drawings, technical specifications, construction plans, reports, and permit applications.
Work on projects involving: Municipal solid waste landfills, Landfill expansions and new cell development, Landfill gas collection and control systems, Landfill gas migration and methane monitoring, Landfill closure and post-closure systems, Leachate collection and management systems, Stormwater-management systems, Industrial wastewater treatment, Composting and organics-management facilities, Transfer stations and material recovery facilities, Air-quality and emissions compliance, Renewable natural gas and alternative energy projects, Environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance.
Apply civil, environmental, geotechnical, and scientific principles to solid waste assignments and related environmental projects.
Develop site plans, facility diagrams, grading plans, drainage systems, and construction details.
Prepare calculations supporting engineering reports, permit applications, and design documents.
Assist with technical evaluations, feasibility studies, alternatives analyses, and cost estimates.
Coordinate with CAD and GIS professionals in the development of plans, figures, and project exhibits.
Help manage projects, project tasks, and technical personnel to meet client expectations and SCS Engineers’ quality standards.
Assist with developing project scopes, budgets, schedules, staffing plans, and deliverables.
Track project progress and communicate potential schedule, budget, or technical concerns.
Coordinate assignments among engineers, scientists, designers, technicians, field personnel, and subcontractors.
Make independent decisions on standard engineering problems and methods within the scope of assigned responsibility.
Present project information and technical recommendations during internal and external meetings.
Support senior project managers and technical leaders on unusual or complex assignments.
Help ensure projects are delivered accurately, safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Prepare and support solid waste, stormwater, industrial wastewater, air-quality, and environmental permit applications.
Review laboratory and field data for accuracy, completeness, trends, and potential compliance concerns.
Prepare compliance-monitoring reports, technical memoranda, agency responses, and supporting documentation.
Coordinate with applicable local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
Assist clients in understanding permitting requirements, compliance obligations, and recommended corrective actions.
Maintain familiarity with evolving environmental regulations and solid waste industry practices.
Conduct field assignments in varied terrain and weather conditions.
Perform or support: Site inspections, Surveys and data collection, Construction observations, Construction quality assurance, Landfill liner and cover-system observations, Environmental sampling, Drilling oversight, Landfill gas monitoring, Stormwater inspections, Facility assessments, Operational evaluations.
Document field conditions and prepare daily reports, inspection summaries, photographs, field logs, and supporting records.
Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, laboratories, drilling companies, surveyors, and facility personnel.
Review contractor submittments, requests for information, and construction documentation as assigned.
Follow all applicable health, safety, security, ethical, client, and company requirements.
Travel to project sites, including occasional overnight assignments, with approximately 20% travel expected.
Perform quality-control reviews of reports, calculations, design plans, data, permit documents, and other technical work products.
Verify that documents meet applicable engineering standards, regulatory requirements, client expectations, and internal quality procedures.
Check calculations, laboratory results, field data, figures, tables, and supporting documentation before submission.
Incorporate comments from senior technical reviewers and help maintain consistent project documentation.
Identify incomplete, inconsistent, or potentially inaccurate technical information and coordinate appropriate corrections.
Communicate professionally with municipal and private-sector clients regarding project status, technical findings, schedules, and deliverables.
Participate in client meetings, project presentations, regulatory discussions, conferences, and industry events.
Assist with proposal preparation, scope development, fee estimates, and qualifications packages.
Help identify follow-on project opportunities through strong technical delivery and responsive client service.
Support relationship-building efforts with facility owners, local governments, contractors, regulators, and industry partners.
Represent SCS Engineers professionally at meetings, conferences, and trade shows.
