Project Coordinator, School Safety, RIS

City of New York•New York City, NY

About The Position

The Project Coordinator will work in the School Safety unit of the NYC Department of Transportation’s Research, Implementation, and Safety (RIS) unit. School Safety improves safety near K–12 schools throughout New York City by redesigning nearby streets, managing curb regulations and signage, and advising city agencies and private parties on school siting, youth safety, and school operations. The work advances the NYC Streets Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan, with particular emphasis on reducing child injuries, improving safety and accessibility, and encouraging non-motorized transportation across all five boroughs. Under the direction of senior staff and with wide latitude for independent judgment, the coordinator will plan, develop, design, and implement Street Improvement Projects. The work includes project management, community outreach, research, data analysis, implementation coordination, and field work. The coordinator will also support research and technical studies, explore innovative safety treatments and policy initiatives, and help develop capital projects for implementation by the Department of Design and Construction on behalf of NYC DOT School Safety. The position will also support the School Slow Zone program and the administration’s goal of installing a 15-mile-per-hour school slow zone next to every K–12 school in New York City by the end of 2029.
