About The Position

The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TPM) supports the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on New York City streets. Its Research, Implementation, and Safety (RIS) unit advances Vision Zero, and its School Safety unit works to improve safety near K–12 schools across the five boroughs. School Safety redesigns streets near schools to reduce child injuries, improve safety and accessibility, and encourage non-motorized transportation. It also advises public agencies and private parties on school siting, youth safety, and school operations, and manages curb regulations and signage near NYC K–12 schools, including the School Slow Zone program. Under senior staff direction and with wide latitude for independent judgment, the Project Coordinator plans, develops, designs, and implements Street Improvement Projects to improve roadway safety, particularly child safety, and advance the NYC Streets Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan. The work includes project management, community outreach, research, data analysis, implementation coordination, and field work. The selected candidate will analyze crash and traffic data, create street designs using AutoCAD, coordinate with DOT staff and partner city agencies, conduct outreach with schools, elected officials, Community Boards, agencies, and other stakeholders, deliver public presentations, and manage implementation of roadway designs. Some projects may involve outreach with students. The role may also involve investigating and piloting innovative safety treatments, developing policy initiatives and capital projects, coordinating research, participating in technical and advisory committee meetings, and reviewing community requests related to school safety and operations. The coordinator will support planning and coordination for the School Slow Zone program, including the goal of installing a 15-mile-per-hour school slow zone next to every NYC K–12 school by the end of 2029.
