The Project Coordinator will work in the Research, Implementation, and Safety (RIS) unit’s School Safety group within the New York City Department of Transportation’s Transportation Planning and Management Division. School Safety improves conditions near K–12 schools across New York City by redesigning streets to reduce child injuries, improve safety and accessibility, and encourage non-motorized transportation. The unit also advises city agencies and private parties on school siting, youth-safety policy, and street-design issues, and manages curb regulations and signage near schools, including the School Slow Zone program. Under the direction of senior staff, and with wide latitude for independent judgment, the coordinator will plan, develop, design, and implement Street Improvement Projects to improve safety for all roadway users, with particular emphasis on child safety. The role supports the goals of the NYC Streets Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan and includes project management, community outreach, research, data analysis, implementation coordination, and field work. The coordinator will contribute to research and policy initiatives, investigate and pilot innovative safety treatments, and develop capital projects for implementation by the Department of Design and Construction on behalf of NYC DOT School Safety. The role also supports the School Slow Zone program, including planning and coordination toward the stated goal of installing a 15-mile-per-hour school slow zone next to every K–12 school in New York City by the end of 2029. Candidates must be serving permanently in the title or reachable on the civil service list.
