About The Position

The Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial aspects of projects across the organization, including budgeting, forecasting, cost tracking, financial reporting, and compliance. This role partners with Project Managers, Operations, Procurement, Accounts Payable, and Finance teams to ensure accurate project accounting, effective internal controls, and sound financial decision-making.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of accounting or finance experience.
  • 3+ years of project accounting experience.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audits, and internal controls.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, and project accounting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, Dynamics 365, or similar.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or CMA preferred; candidates pursuing certification may be considered.
  • Experience with Power BI or other reporting tools preferred.
  • Public accounting experience.
  • Experience in a SOX-compliant environment.
  • Experience supporting capital, construction, or large operational projects.
  • Knowledge of project cost accounting and revenue recognition.
  • Experience developing accounting procedures and internal controls.

Responsibilities

  • Manage project accounting activities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Monitor project budgets, forecasts, and expenditures.
  • Review project costs for proper coding and allocation.
  • Analyze budget variances and provide recommendations.
  • Support capitalization and expense accounting requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual and financial obligations.
  • Prepare monthly project financial reports and dashboards.
  • Perform budget-to-actual and forecast-to-actual analysis.
  • Analyze project profitability, cash flow, and cost drivers.
  • Support annual budgeting and forecasting activities.
  • Provide financial insights to support business decisions.
  • Prepare journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
  • Maintain project accounting records and general ledger accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, SOX, and company policies.
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing documentation and schedules.
  • Identify process improvements and control enhancements.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Operations, Procurement, and Finance teams.
  • Provide guidance on project spending and budget management.
  • Support business cases, investment analysis, and project approvals.
  • Communicate financial performance and risks to leadership.
