About The Position

Southwest Power Pool (SPP) is seeking a talented Programmer Developer to join their IT Markets team. This role is critical in supporting and maintaining mission-critical applications essential for SPP’s System Operations team, which oversees the bulk electric grid and wholesale power markets. The IT Markets team is responsible for the performance, optimization, and reliability of these applications. The successful candidate will optimize application and process performance, collaborate with subject matter experts across IT to develop and implement technical solutions, and provide support for the real-time Market Operating System. This position involves participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation for continuous system operation and troubleshooting. The role offers an opportunity to work on impactful, mission-critical applications, collaborate with a talented team, and support the reliable functioning of vital energy systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or an Information Technology-related field or equivalent job-related experience
  • Lead Level: Eight (8) years of applicable Information Technology development and support experience; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Senior Level: Six (6) years of applicable Information Technology development and support experience; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Level II: Three (3) years of Information Technology Development/Support experience
  • Expert working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, UNIX or Linux operating systems, application development and support, and database management systems
  • Expert in one or more modern programming languages
  • Expert troubleshooting, problem solving, and analytical skills
  • Expert written and oral communication skills
  • Expert working knowledge of SDLC and project life cycle methods and practices
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills
  • Understanding of and compliance with SPP Policies and Procedures

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) or more years applicable utility industry experience
  • Comprehensive understanding of SPP’s core business model

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain mission-critical applications essential for SPP’s System Operations team.
  • Oversee the bulk electric grid and wholesale power markets within SPP's extensive footprint.
  • Ensure the performance, optimization, and reliability of applications crucial for day-to-day operations.
  • Optimize the performance and efficiency of various applications and processes.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts from across the IT department to develop and implement technical solutions.
  • Provide support for the real-time Market Operating System.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for maintaining continuous operation of critical systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues to ensure minimal disruption to operations.
  • Leverage programming and development skills to contribute to the overall success of the IT Markets team.
  • Drive innovative solutions, optimize system performance, and contribute to the reliable operation of SPP’s essential systems.
