About The Position

Provides technical support to Plant Operations and has overall project management responsibility for a variety of wastewater treatment process control/optimization initiatives. This role is crucial for ensuring the high-quality delivery of drinking water and the effective operation of wastewater treatment processes. The position is based at Deer Island in Winthrop, MA, and offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on public health and the environment within a mission-driven organization.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in chemical or environmental engineering, or other related field.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in water/wastewater process design, control and troubleshooting, including major equipment/process startups.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of supervisory, project management, or managerial capacity experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operators License or driver's license from another state.
  • Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade VI certification, or ability to obtain within one (1) year.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the types of mechanical equipment (pumps, compressors, etc.) in a wastewater, power, or process environment, including applications theory, operational characteristics, and performance evaluation.
  • Experience with automated (computer and/or PLC based) control systems, including logic development, tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of wastewater process control theory, practices, and principles.
  • Computer fluency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and related PC-based software.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • On-call or standby coverage may be required on occasion as needed for plant emergencies or for other purposes as directed.
  • Position may be eligible for teleworking up to two days/week.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts process control studies to identify modifications that improve process performance, including chemical and energy use optimization.
  • Manages the implementation of identified process modifications.
  • Manages the design, implementation, modification, and application of control strategies and physical process modifications for assigned plant processes.
  • Assists with the checkout and startup of new process equipment and systems.
  • Performs field investigations and develops corrective action plans for process control problems.
  • Coordinates with operations personnel for the collection and analysis of operational data for process control strategy development.
  • Assists in determining operating capabilities, reliability, and performance criteria for existing and proposed wastewater treatment processes.
  • Coordinates control system development and implementation with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance staff.
  • Provides process-related, site-specific technical training to applicable operations and maintenance personnel.
  • Conducts evaluations of existing and proposed process equipment and instruments.
  • Prepares cost/benefit analyses for equipment or instrument use in improving process performance.
  • Provides process control and operations reviews of reports and designs from consultants and Authority engineering staff.
  • Manages the Deer Island stormwater monitoring program.
  • Manages assigned Deer Island bulk chemical and service contracts.
  • Provides support for the maintenance and updating of the DITP Integrated Contingency Plan.
  • Evaluates assigned employees' performance.
  • Provides on-call emergency and routine assistance.
  • Performs related duties as required.
