About The Position

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) aims to eliminate racial and other inequities that lead to premature mortality. CHECW works to increase awareness of the harm caused by historical and structural injustices and advocates for redress for impacted NYC communities. The center addresses inequities across community and healthcare systems in partnership with various organizations. CHECW's work focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial factors, addressing both upstream and downstream influences to improve the health and well-being of New Yorkers. The division includes several bureaus, including the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention (BCDP). BCDP strives to reduce the burden of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer among New Yorkers by focusing on nutrition, tobacco use, the built environment, and cancer reduction. BCDP promotes evidence-based policies, programs, community engagement, and research to shift environments, change systems, and promote health equity. As part of CHECW, BCDP contributes to eliminating racial inequities and reducing premature mortality. BCDP emphasizes reducing exposure to unhealthy foods and tobacco products and countering industry practices that negatively impact health, prioritizing communities disproportionately affected by chronic disease. The Active Design Unit within BCDP is seeking a Program Manager to oversee the implementation and daily management of its place-based programs in schools and neighborhoods, including program planning, partnership coordination, research, and evaluation.

Requirements

  • Three years of full-time experience in program management, community-based programming, public health, government, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of chronic disease prevention, physical activity, the built environment, and/or Active Design.
  • Excellent oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, work collaboratively across disciplines, and build effective relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong project management and coordination skills, including the ability to work effectively with government agencies, community organizations, consultants, academic partners, and other external stakeholders.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1' or '2' above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in '2' above.
  • Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in '1' and '2' above.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and implement place-based program projects that advance the goals of the Active Design Unit and BCDP, in close collaboration with community-based organizations, government agencies, consultants, and other external partners.
  • In collaboration with unit Director, manage and oversee programmatic budgets, contracts, and procurement.
  • Manage strategic relationships with peer city agencies, community organizations, academic institutions, and other external partners to share information, coordinate activities, and collaborate on projects that support and inform the work of the Active Design Unit.
  • Support community engagement and partner coordination throughout program planning and implementation, including activities that incorporate community perspectives and lived experience into Active Design projects.
  • Prepare program updates, grant proposals, funder progress reports, and other written materials to communicate program activities, accomplishments, and outcomes.
  • Supervise and manage staff and other team members as assigned, providing guidance, setting priorities, and overseeing work assignments.
  • Conduct research and review public health and built environment literature to inform the design and implementation of evidence-informed initiatives that leverage urban planning, architecture, and design strategies to promote healthy behaviors and improve health outcomes.
  • Coordinate with Bureau and agency colleagues and external city agency and private partners to plan and implement research and evaluation activities in support of Active Design programs and strategic initiatives.
  • Support the development and implementation of data collection and evaluation protocols to document program implementation, participation, utilization, and outcomes, and contribute to analyses, reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Monitor and synthesize emerging research, best practices, and public policy developments related to the built environment, physical activity, mental health, social connection, and other health outcomes, particularly in school and neighborhood settings.
  • Plan and coordinate meetings and events, including developing event logistics, preparing presentations and other materials, and communicating program information to key audiences.
  • Contribute to the development of reports, publications, presentations, and other knowledge-sharing materials that communicate best practices and practical strategies for integrating Active Design into school and neighborhood settings.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
