About The Position

San Bernardino Community College District accepts applications for an hourly professional expert position for our San Bernardino Valley College on a continuous basis. The San Bernardino Valley College Gresham Gallery seeks a responsible, organized, and creative individual to serve as a Program Assistant/Gallery Host. The Gallery is an academic and community-centered exhibition space that enriches the campus and surrounding region through exhibitions, educational programs, lectures, receptions, workshops, and community events, all designed to create transformative visitor experiences. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of museum and gallery operations, strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, arts professionals, volunteers, and members of the public. Strong research, writing, and graphic design skills are highly desirable.

Requirements

  • Six months to one year of hands-on experience in a public-facing museum, gallery, or arts-related environment.
  • Educational background in Visual Arts, Art History, Gallery and Museum Management, Arts Administration, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of gallery or museum practices and visitor engagement strategies.
  • Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
  • Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)
  • Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment
  • Other pre-employment requirements may be required depending on the position (i.e. certifications or licenses; see job posting qualifications section for details).
  • Successful completion of all pre-employment requirements is mandatory to be eligible for employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree preferred.
  • Graphic design and marketing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Greet visitors, students, campus groups, and community members while educating them about current exhibitions and Art Department programs.
  • Coordinate visitor tours, workshops, receptions, and special events hosted by the Gallery.
  • Serve as a liaison for communications related to Gallery operations and programs.
  • Assist with exhibition installation, gallery preparation, and exhibition changeovers in collaboration with the Gallery Curator and the Art Department Chair.
  • Support the planning and organization of the annual Student Art Exhibition, the Faculty Exhibition, and other pop-up or juried exhibitions.
  • Assist with intake procedures, jury coordination, and exhibition logistics.
  • Conduct research on exhibited artworks and objects to produce wall labels, didactics, lesson plans, educational materials, and other curatorial content.
  • Assist with gallery marketing and promotional efforts, including creating visual and graphic design materials.
  • Monitor gallery spaces to ensure artwork safety, uphold professional presentation standards, and ensure visitor adherence to gallery policies.
  • Answer phone calls and coordinate class tours and educational programming.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders, including the Art Department Chair, Gallery Curator, Dean of Arts & Humanities, Facilities and Maintenance staff, faculty, and technicians.
