About The Position

The Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications and nominations for a faculty position as a Professor of Small Animal Veterinary Surgery (non-tenure track; Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor). We are seeking a dynamic faculty committed to advancing excellence in veterinary education, fostering a culture of innovation, and promoting a fun, immersive learning environment for academic success among our students. Furthermore, we are creating an inspired academic community dedicated to ensuring our graduates will approach veterinary medicine and surgery with confidence, curiosity, and capability. At Lyon, you will work in a culture that values creativity, perseverance, and practical problem solving. Primary responsibilities include teaching, service, and scholarly activities. Teaching activities are primarily associated with surgery principles and clinical application. Service activities vary with individual preferences and program needs. Scholarly activities may include research, continuing education, and publications relevant to the profession and/or veterinary surgery, and innovations in veterinary education and surgical training. Interprofessional research addressing One Health challenges is also encouraged. A typical time assignment is 75% teaching, 20% scholarly activities, and 5% service. Alternative hiring models including part time, non-benefit eligible positions will be considered.

Requirements

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • Board Certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, another relevant ABVS specialty (such as ABVP), or progress towards specialty certification.

  • Prior experience teaching within a veterinary or medical school.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in educational and/or professional settings.
  • Demonstrated scholarly activities in education, innovations, entrepreneurship, and/or medical research.

Responsibilities

  • Provide innovative education, mentorship, and guidance to all students in a variety of settings, including the classroom, laboratory, simulation center, and Cabot Animal Support Services in the discipline of veterinary surgery.
  • Play a critical role in promoting the health and welfare of animals within a shelter environment, including high quality surgical and medical care to small animals, support of population management, promotion of public health, and collaboration within the shelter program.
  • Participate in student assessment, feedback, and remediation to ensure that students meet LCSVM's high academic standards in the areas of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Participate in curriculum development, delivery, assessment, and enhancement.
  • Provide service to Lyon College and the greater community by serving on committees, providing leadership, participating in community outreach events, and working with professional organizations and groups.
  • Maintain discipline and teaching expertise through continuing professional education.
  • Engage in scholarly activity, including research, authorship, presentations at conferences, innovation, entrepreneurship, and mentorship of students in their scholarly activities.
  • Opportunities exist to provide medical services to partners of the veterinary school, such as private practices.
  • Promote the mission of LCSVM to all faculty, staff, students, and to the local, state, national, and international communities, as appropriate.
  • Contribute to a culture of academic creativity, innovation, and collaboration that fosters student success.
  • Promote effective, collaborative, inclusive working relationships among faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders.
  • Advance the principles of andragogy and pedagogy throughout LCSVM.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
