Professor of Practice - Literacy Coordinator
About The Position
The University of New Mexico's College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) invites applications for a full-time Professor of Practice – Literacy Coordinator position beginning Fall 2026. This position is supported through the New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) and will play a leadership role in supporting the implementation of culturally and linguistically sustaining practices, structured literacy and science of reading initiatives across educator preparation programs. The Literacy Coordinator will collaborate with and support faculty, staff, school district partners, and state agencies to strengthen literacy preparation, support curriculum alignment, facilitate literacy-focused clinical experiences, assist with assessment and reporting activities, and advance continuous improvement efforts across teacher preparation programs.
Requirements
- Master's degree or higher in Education, Literacy, Reading, Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, Educational Leadership or a closely related field.
- Minimum of five years of successful classroom teaching experience.
Nice To Haves
- Doctorate in Education, Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Special Education, or a related field.
- Experience working in teacher preparation programs or higher education settings.
- LETRS certification, structured literacy credential, or comparable professional training.
- Experience supporting faculty, advocacy, curriculum review, program improvement, or accreditation activities.
- Experience working across multiple educational agencies or institutions.
- Experience using candidate performance data to support program improvement and decision-making.
- Experience coordinating professional development or faculty learning initiatives.
- Knowledge of New Mexico educator preparation programs and educational systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
- Demonstrated commitment to cultivating and understanding use of culturally and linguistically sustaining literacy practices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the science of reading and structured literacy practices.
- Experience collaborating with educators, schools, districts, or higher education faculty.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the College's Literacy Coordinator and provide leadership for literacy-related initiatives across educator preparation programs.
- Collaborate with faculty and external partners to support implementation of structured literacy requirements.
- Support curriculum alignment and program improvement efforts.
- Assist with literacy-focused clinical experiences.
- Coordinate assessment, reporting, and continuous improvement activities.
- Participate in state and institutional literacy initiatives.
- Serve as a resource for evidence-based literacy instruction and science of reading implementation.
- Work closely with faculty in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, and Special Education.
- Support collaboration between the UNM Albuquerque campus and UNM-Gallup.
