About The Position

The Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida is seeking a 12-month tenured or tenure-accruing faculty member for a position that is 70% research and 30% Extension. This role will be based in the Entomology and Nematology Department in Gainesville, Florida. The faculty member will be responsible for developing an internationally recognized, collaborative research program focused on honey bees, integrating basic and applied research to address critical challenges facing apiculture and delivering practical solutions for the beekeeping industry. The successful candidate is expected to establish a strong, extramurally funded research program and disseminate findings through publications. Research areas may include honey bee husbandry, nutrition, queen health, pests and pathogens, epidemiology, environmental stressors, behavior, and other aspects of honey bee biology, health, and management. Extension responsibilities include developing targeted Extension programs, conducting needs assessments, developing learning tools and activities, and evaluating program impacts. Cooperation with beekeeping organizations, county Extension faculty, Florida agricultural industries, and the Florida Department of Agriculture is expected. The candidate will also participate in undergraduate and graduate education by chairing and serving on committees, supervising research, and publishing with students. Faculty are encouraged to participate in professional development and may teach courses and seminars. All faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in Research, Teaching, and Extension, regardless of assignment split.

Requirements

  • A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Entomology or a closely related discipline.
  • Evidence of collaborative research.
  • Strong publication record.
  • Experience in apiculture.
  • Demonstrated ability to procure extramural research funding for appointment at the Associate and Full Professor rank.
  • Demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.
  • A commitment to UF core values.

  • Postdoctoral experience is desirable for appointment at the Assistant Professor rank.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an internationally recognized, collaborative research program focused on honey bees that integrates basic and applied research.
  • Address critical challenges facing apiculture and deliver practical solutions that benefit the beekeeping industry.
  • Establish a strong, extramurally funded research program.
  • Disseminate research findings through publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Conduct research in areas such as honey bee husbandry, nutrition, queen health and resilience, pests and pathogens, epidemiology, environmental stressors, behavior, and other aspects of honey bee biology, health, and management.
  • Develop a targeted Extension program related to the appropriate field of expertise.
  • Conduct need assessments of specific target audiences (beekeepers, government entities etc.).
  • Develop learning tools and activities that meet identified needs.
  • Evaluate the impacts of Extension programs to facilitate program adjustment and satisfy reporting requirements.
  • Cooperate with beekeeping organizations, county Extension faculty, Florida agricultural industries, and the Florida Department of Agriculture.
  • Participate actively in undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Chair and serve on graduate committees.
  • Supervise thesis, dissertation, and undergraduate research.
  • Publish research results with students.
  • Participate in professional development activities related to teaching and advising.
  • Teach courses and seminars as needed.
