The Center for Arts at the University of Austin invites applications for full- or part-time faculty positions in the study of the ancient world, at any academic rank. The Center is especially interested in candidates specializing in ancient Rome, Hellenistic Greece, late antiquity, and/or early Christianity. Faculty will teach undergraduate courses on the history, literature, and thought of classical antiquity within a curriculum focused on the development of Western civilization, and will maintain active research agendas. The anticipated appointment start date is Fall 2027. Faculty will be appointed as Assistant, Associate, or full Professor. These are long-term academic appointments supported by renewable five-year contracts; the University does not operate under a traditional tenure system. The annual teaching load is 18 quarter hours, equivalent to 12 semester hours or a 2/2 load. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with rank; full-time Assistant Professor salaries in Arts start at $90,000. Compensation includes comprehensive benefits and a research stipend. Candidates focused on ancient Rome and/or Hellenistic Greece may teach courses on the Roman Republic, Roman Empire, classical historiography, Plutarch, and/or Hellenistic and Roman philosophy, along with upper-level courses of their own design. Candidates focused on late antiquity and/or early Christianity may teach courses on the Bible, early Christian thought, the emergence of Islam, and the history of the West from the fall of Rome to the fall of Constantinople, along with upper-level courses of their own design. Candidates specializing in ancient Rome must be able to teach Latin at all levels; candidates specializing in late antiquity must be able to teach Greek at all levels. Applicants should submit a CV and cover letter describing their interest in the position, relevant teaching and research experience, and alignment with the University's mission. Applicants interested in part-time work should indicate this in their cover letter. Review begins immediately, and applications submitted by January 4, 2027 will receive priority review. Candidates selected for further review may be asked for writing samples, references, and/or a teaching portfolio.
