The Professional Student Nurse is a senior-level nursing student currently enrolled in a baccalaureate degree nursing program. Under the guidance and supervision of a clinical instructor, preceptor, or facility-employed registered nurse, the student supports patient care activities. The role requires the student to work within their skill level and scope of responsibility while seeking learning opportunities and developing professionally. The work takes place in a comfortable indoor environment, where noise, odors, cramped workspaces, or fumes may sometimes cause discomfort. The role can involve moderate to extreme physical effort, including walking, standing, squatting, reaching, pushing, pulling, performing CPR, and lifting materials, equipment, or patients. Lifting may involve heavy or awkward loads over 50 pounds. Adequate vision, hearing, speech, and sense of touch are needed to perform tasks and communicate accurately. Focused attention and alertness are required. Occupational exposures may include communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, radiation, hazardous medications, and disoriented or combative patients. Shift work, standby duty, and extended shifts may be required when deemed necessary by nursing leadership. The role uses standard patient-care supplies and equipment, patient lift and transport devices, mechanical devices, standard hospital office equipment, and point-of-care testing processes.
