6 West is a dynamic and fast-paced medical surgical unit that provides comprehensive care across the full spectrum of patient needs. From short-term observation stays of 24 to 48 hours to extended hospitalizations lasting several weeks, our team delivers high-quality, compassionate care tailored to each individual. We treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting all body systems, as well as an array of surgical cases. This diversity makes 6 West an exceptional environment for learning and professional development, offering exposure to a broad range of diagnoses and procedures without being limited to a single specialty. Our staffing model emphasizes teamwork and collaboration. Each six-patient assignment is supported by a dedicated partnership between a Registered Nurse and a Patient Care Technician, ensuring a holistic and focused approach to caregiving. Requirements

  • 0–2 years of nursing experience required
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care for patients across the lifespan
  • Ability to assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs and deliver appropriate care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures
  • Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members including executives, managers, physicians, and support staff
  • Capable of working effectively in a complex, fast-paced environment with changing priorities and specialized equipment
  • Mobility and visual/manual dexterity
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice or a multistate license under the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required within 30 days of hire (AHA standards)
  • Graduate Nurses must pass the licensure exam within 6 months of hire or within one year of graduation (whichever comes first)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • UPMC-approved national certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Deliver patient-centered care using the nursing process and Relationship-Based Care model
