About The Position

To oversee and coordinate the academic and flight education programs in the Professional Pilot Program at the Burlington Airport and Williston campuses to meet the NECHE and FAA accreditation criteria for the program and to prepare participating students to be professional pilots according to FAA 141 guidelines.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, plus five to seven years relevant aviation and teaching experience OR a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Broad-based knowledge and skills related to education and aviation.
  • Experience teaching didactically and knowledge of in-flight instruction
  • Current or former licensed pilot.
  • Strong organizational, administrative and budget management skills.
  • Ability to communicate and deal effectively with and represent the program to the University and student communities, and to a wide range of individuals throughout the State.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the major activities of the Professional Pilot Technology Program in conjunction with the academic policies and activities of VTSU.
  • Collaborate with Chief Ground Training Instructor to establish and maintain contacts with the third-party flight provider, Burlington International Airport, other cooperating agencies, community groups, state and national advisory boards and accreditation organizations and others as needed.
  • Provide leadership to carry out the academic schedule and curriculum plan, proposing updates to meet consistent statewide program objectives.
  • Oversee local recruitment activities, establish written criteria for the admission committee, review prospective candidates for admission, serve as a member of the admissions committee, assist with pre-entrance testing and interviews, monitor enrollments and ensure that student-related operations are consistent with program and university policies.
  • Provide academic advising and other support for students as needed; deal with a variety of disciplinary, policy enforcement and safety-related matters in the interest of students, program integrity and collaborate with Ground Training Instructor regarding airport expectations.
  • Primary responsibility for scheduling courses and assigning instructors; recruit new instructors as needed. May also participate in and/or present courses of instruction.
  • Collaborate with Chief Ground Training Instructor to develop and administer the program operating budget, including: implementing controls for the management and disbursement of program funds, preparing and maintaining financial reports as needed.
  • Participate in the evaluation of part-time faculty as requested by the Dean in keeping with the terms of the faculty collective bargaining agreements.
  • Prepare a variety of administrative and management reports relating to program activities, data, financial and other informational areas.
  • Confer regularly with the Dean and VTSU Administrators to plan and evaluate program goals, exchange information and resolve problems.
  • Stay abreast of current developments and trends in the field of aviation through professional development opportunities; serve on related committees and/or boards and participate in state, regional and national affiliations in the best interest of the program.
  • Perform other related duties relative to the Professional Pilot Technology program purpose.
