About The Position

This role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a Gas Fired Power Plant. This includes various plant systems such as water treatment, circulating water, condensate/feedwater, heat recovery steam generator, turbine, generator, control, and electrical systems. The technician will inspect, repair, and maintain mechanical, hydraulic, and steam-related equipment including pumps, boilers, turbines, valves, compressors, couplings, safety valves, fans, and heat exchangers. A strong electrical background or specific electrician experience is required as the candidate will be assigned electrician duties. The role also involves completing qualifications in operations, chemical/environmental, electrical, control room operation, I&C, and mechanical areas. The position may require shift work and overtime to ensure plant reliability. Responsibilities include estimating starting times for idle generation units, bringing units online, operating PC-based control systems, changing turbine/generator loading, reading meters, recording data, reporting malfunctioning equipment, performing troubleshooting, and maintaining plant operating history through logs and documentation. The technician will also make decisions and recommend repair techniques, and provide documentation of repairs and measurements through reports or MAXIMO work orders.

Requirements

  • Electrician experience or strong electrical background required
  • High School education or GED equivalent with four years related experience in a related industry or 2 years related experience and a 2 years Associates Degree in Power/Industrial Technology.
  • All applicants (excluding applicants currently employed in specific positions in Fossil Generation) must be a successful candidate on the Plant Operator Selection System/Power Plant Operations and Maintenance (POSS / MASS) in order to be considered a candidate for this position.
  • Must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shift schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a Gas Fired Power Plant.
  • Inspects, repairs, and maintains various types of plant mechanical, hydraulic and steam related equipment.

  • Estimates starting time for idle generation units and follows prescribed startup procedures to bring units on line at a specified time.
  • Proficiently operates the PC-based control systems as the Inside Operator in the Steam Plant.
  • Changes the loading of turbine/generators as required from the control systems.
  • Reads meters and records data at specified intervals in appropriate logs and computers.
  • Immediately reports malfunctioning equipment of abnormal meter readings/equipment performance to the supervisor and completes the appropriate records.
  • Performs troubleshooting and documentation and assists in the resolution of problems discovered during the shift.
  • Maintains plant operating history through timely completion of plant logs and required documentation.
  • Makes decisions and recommends appropriate repair techniques to the senior operator or supervisor.
  • Provides specialized accurate written documentation of repairs made and all appropriate measurements/readings/conditions through reports or MAXIMO work orders.
  • Perform substation and transformer maintenance, protective relays, low / medium voltage breaker repair, arc flash analysis and recognition, electrical and workplace safety.
  • Properly conducts low, medium and high voltage switching, clearing and grounding activities for all plant auxiliary equipment.
  • Controls system voltages and frequencies as requested by dispatcher.
  • All other duties as assigned.
