About The Position

The Boeing Company is seeking a senior production engineer to support its AvionX team at the new Smithfield Production & Test facility in Smithfield, Pennsylvania. The role supports Enterprise Test & Technology (ET&T) and leads production readiness, testability, and manufacturability for avionics and electronics across Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS), Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA), and Boeing Global Services (BGS). The position influences design and supply-chain decisions and supports faster introduction of next-generation avionics. The engineer leads research, development, evaluation, and integration of robotics, automation, and other technologies, including associated equipment and tooling. This senior electronics-focused role combines circuit- and system-level expertise with hands-on manufacturing and test experience. The engineer partners early with Design Engineering, translates design intent into repeatable factory processes, and serves as a technical interface among Design, Manufacturing, Test, and Quality throughout program lifecycles. The role champions Design for Manufacturing and Test (DFM/DFT), removes production-readiness barriers, and applies lessons learned to reduce cost, risk, and schedule exposure. The role is highly visible across AvionX and the broader Boeing enterprise, with opportunities to influence architecture, supplier strategies, and manufacturing automation. Travel to suppliers and other Boeing sites is required as needed; the posting specifies 25% travel. The position is Shift 1 and offers relocation based on candidate eligibility. The stated summary pay range for Chief Engineer level (Level 5) is $154,700–$209,300. The position requires a U.S. Person for export-control compliance. It does not require a security clearance and is not safety-sensitive. Boeing will not sponsor employment visas. Candidates must complete a technical assessment as part of selection. Successful candidates must satisfy the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (including manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science; the posting also lists Bachelor’s degree or equivalent under Education.
  • 10 or more years of experience with electronics product design.
  • 10 or more years of experience using electrical schematics to design and troubleshoot test architectures involving FPGAs, custom PCBs, benchtop equipment, and the microelectronics unit under test.
  • 10 or more years of experience working directly with manufacturing engineering, design engineering, and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools.
  • Ability to meet U.S. export-control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person.
  • Complete the required technical assessment as part of the selection process.
  • Satisfy the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to travel quarterly or more if needed.
  • Extensive experience, preferably in avionics, as a technical lead or chief engineer overseeing tooling, calibration, and manufacturing engineering activities.
  • Demonstrated record of leading complex cross-functional engineering projects, resolving technical risks, and delivering solutions on schedule.
  • Strong mentorship and people-leadership skills, including developing technical talent, providing engineering guidance, and aligning teams to program requirements.
  • Ability to maintain and manage significant authority to autonomously represent Manufacturing & Quality in technical decisions for integrated product teams across multiple programs.
  • Experience driving supplier readiness and partnering with procurement and supplier engineering to ensure supplier process capability, supplier test standards, and mitigation plans are in place before production release.

Responsibilities

  • Review work products and provide Manufacturing and Quality input on design and test artifacts, including schematics, PCB/CCA drawings, parts lists, test plans and procedures, process templates, and coordination or decision memos; ensure documentation meets producibility, testability, and program requirements.
  • Drive New Product Introduction (NPI) readiness and DFM/DFT; resolve product and process issues through root-cause analysis and corrective action; mentor teams and embed Safety, Quality, and Lean improvements across programs.
  • Apply Boeing design principles and knowledge of manufacturing capabilities and constraints to assess and resolve product or process issues throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring across the AvionX organization.
  • Create mitigation plans for risks to Safety, Quality, manufacturing processes, test, and program schedule, and drive cross-functional closure over the full product lifecycle.
  • Develop, deliver, and maintain technical training, Site Level Instructions (SLIs), and equipment demonstrations.
  • Mentor engineers, interns, co-ops, and rotational participants in PCB/CCA manufacturability, test techniques, and troubleshooting practices.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional scrums, technical meetings, governance and decision boards, and Lean innovation activities; facilitate timely decisions, continuous improvement, and alignment among Design, Manufacturing, Test, Quality, and Supply Chain.
  • Create and maintain AvionX technical artifacts, including site drawings, assembly and process flows, test-fixture specifications, and process templates, to enable consistent, repeatable builds across sites and suppliers.
  • Establish production-readiness gates and go/no-go criteria, define production KPIs, and deliver measurable outcomes for ramp rate, yield, and first-pass test success.
  • Influence supplier design-for-manufacturing strategies and ensure testability and maintainability are engineered into products from the outset.
  • Drive cost-reduction and throughput-improvement initiatives through readiness reviews, continuous-improvement events, and automation or tooling implementation when it provides measurable value to quality, safety, or schedule.
  • Travel to suppliers and other Boeing sites as needed to support ramp and sustainment, supplier audits, and cross-site knowledge transfer.
  • Lead research, development, evaluation, and integration of robotics, automation, and new technologies, including related equipment and tooling.
