Product Manager - Developer Tools

Revel•Los Angeles, CA

About The Position

Revel is hiring a Product Manager to own how customers write, test, and ship RevelCode control programs for hardware. The role owns both the RevelCode language experience and the IDE being built for it. RevelCode is used by test and controls engineers, and its programs execute against physical systems, so confusing compiler errors and slow test loops can increase the risk of mistakes reaching hardware. The Product Manager will own the workflow for writing, testing, deploying, and monitoring RevelCode, including configuration editing and deployment to the runtime, unit testing control logic, version control, and dashboard generation. They will lead customer and operator discovery, including at air-gapped sites, and develop an IDE strategy that explains how the product serves control-programming needs better than a general-purpose editor and what customers give up where functionality is not rebuilt. The role works closely with the runtime and language engineering team, as well as platform design and front-end engineering. It offers direct exposure to the Head of Product and CEO and hands-on collaboration with engineers writing control programs for real hardware.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of product management experience on developer tools such as an IDE, code editor, language toolchain, CI system, or SDK.
  • Hands-on programming experience, including years spent writing and debugging code.
  • Experience conducting customer research and turning it into a clear product strategy.
  • Ability to work closely with engineers on technical tradeoffs and explain those tradeoffs in writing.
  • Experience coordinating engineers to execute on a product vision.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with industrial automation or test systems, such as PLC programming, LabVIEW, or test stand software.
  • Experience with language tooling, such as the Language Server Protocol, editor extensions, or compiler diagnostics.
  • Experience shipping software for on-premise or air-gapped environments.
  • Experience with browser-based editors such as Monaco or CodeMirror.
  • Experience in a safety-critical or regulated domain, such as aerospace, energy, automotive, or medical devices.
  • A record of shipping a product that replaced an established tool, including the migration plan for existing users.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full workflow for writing, testing, deploying, and monitoring RevelCode, including editing and deploying configurations to the runtime, unit testing control logic, version control, and dashboard generation.
  • Own RevelCode usability end to end, including syntax, snippets, completion, diagnostics, and improving confusing compiler errors reported by customers.
  • Conduct discovery with customers and operators, including at air-gapped sites, to understand which editor features they depend on.
  • Develop an IDE strategy that aligns with engineering and clarifies how the IDE improves on general-purpose editors for control programs and what functionality customers give up.
  • Work closely with engineers on technical tradeoffs and explain those tradeoffs in writing.
  • Coordinate engineers to execute on a product vision.
