About The Position

At Gerber Gear, we design tools and gear built for people who go beyond the expected. From everyday carry to demanding outdoor environments, our products are made to perform when it matters. We’re looking for a Product Engineer to join our New Product Development team in Portland, Oregon. In this role, you’ll help bring innovative consumer products from early concepts to production-ready products. You’ll combine mechanical engineering expertise, hands-on prototyping, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration to turn ideas into products people can rely on. This is a great opportunity for an engineer who enjoys seeing their work move from 3D CAD and prototypes to real products in consumers’ hands.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, plus 3+ years of relevant experience in consumer product design, mechanical engineering, or a similar field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering concepts.
• Experience supporting or managing engineering projects from concept through implementation.
• Experience with 3D CAD; SolidWorks experience preferred.
• Experience designing and developing consumer products preferred.
• Consumer goods or outdoor industry experience preferred.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to understand and interpret complex mechanical concepts and technical information.
• Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, product structures, costing, and document control.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across functions and with external partners.
• Excellent organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Curiosity, initiative, and a practical, hands-on approach to solving problems.
• An interest in outdoor gear, tools, and products designed for real-world use.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop innovative consumer products from concept through production.
• Create 3D CAD models using SolidWorks or similar CAD systems.
• Develop concepts and mechanical designs that balance performance, manufacturability, cost, and user needs.
• Build and evaluate prototypes to validate designs and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Develop technical specification and drawing packages, including GD&T, performance specifications, and test procedures.
• Evaluate off-tool samples and support first article approval and release.
• Help deliver production-ready products that meet quality, performance, cost, and timing expectations.
• Research, design, analyze, and implement engineering projects using established procedures and best practices.
• Review design proposals, specifications, regulations, and other technical requirements.
• Complete engineering drawings and product specifications.
• Analyze designs and recommend solutions to technical challenges.
• Ensure products and systems meet customer and product requirements.
• Manage multiple projects of varying scope and complexity while maintaining timelines and priorities.
• Partner closely with Product, Design, Marketing, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality, and other cross-functional teams throughout the product development process.
• Communicate project information clearly across departments and help facilitate reviews and decision-making.
• Review supplier designs and provide technical feedback.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal teams and external partners.
• Keep project stakeholders informed of progress, risks, and significant issues.
• Create and maintain accurate technical documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
• Ensure project documentation is complete, current, and appropriately controlled.
• Understand intellectual property and patents and support navigation of the patent process.
• Assist with product safety requirements and compliance.
• Support the team in identifying and resolving technical and product development challenges.
• Take on special projects and other responsibilities as needed.
