Product Engineer, Foundations Team
About The Position
The Product Engineer will join Coast’s Foundations team, which builds and maintains essential services that enable customers to transact confidently. The team works on payment processing, the transaction authorization engine, and SMS flows that provide drivers with spending information. The role offers visibility across engineering and the wider business, including risk and underwriting, finance, product, and design. It is a high-agency position with significant autonomy and responsibility, requiring cross-functional collaboration, rapid delivery, and ownership of outcomes across the technology stack. Coast emphasizes fast iteration, learning from clients, building quality into products, and pragmatic execution. The role is based in New York City and requires working in the office three to four days per week. The successful candidate will build product features end to end, evaluate and integrate critical third-party software and infrastructure, help improve engineering processes and quality, contribute to company culture, and influence early technology and implementation decisions. In the first year, success includes leading a project from idea to production, implementing an AI-based solution that improves product quality across engineering, and contributing expertise to the team’s culture.
Requirements
- 4–10+ years of experience working with high-quality engineering teams and a proven record of frequently delivering quality software to production.
- Experience working on business-critical services.
- An AI-native mindset, including current use of AI tools in daily work and enthusiasm for expanding their use.
- Ownership of the full solution lifecycle, from ideation through delivery and iteration.
- Substantial experience with server-side programming, databases such as Postgres and DynamoDB, messaging, REST and APIs, and distributed systems.
- Experience with modern web development using TypeScript.
- Extensive experience working in cross-functional agile teams with product and design.
- Hands-on experience developing cloud applications, preferably on AWS.
- A proven history of delivering complex, highly available, and scalable distributed systems.
- Pragmatic approach and ability to get work done.
- Passion for building great customer products.
- Ability to work independently with little oversight in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Based in New York City and able to work in the office 3–4 days per week.
Responsibilities
