Product Designer

Modern Classrooms ProjectWashington, DC
$130,000 - $160,000Remote

About The Position

The Modern Classrooms Project is seeking a Product Designer to own the look, feel, and functionality of their new software products. This is a foundational role where the designer will craft interfaces end-to-end, establish the design system, and ensure the software is user-friendly for teachers and students. The designer will work closely with founders and senior leaders, shaping the 'how' of product development, including user interface, interactions, and on-screen copy. This role is ideal for someone energized by taking a product from rough to refined and seeing their work used in real classrooms. The designer will help build a mature design operation from the ground up.

Requirements

  • Ability to take a design flow from wireframe to high-fidelity to clickable prototype.
  • Experience putting designs in front of real users and observing their interactions.
  • Proficiency in information architecture and design systems.
  • Ability to build scalable components using auto-layout, variables, and variants.
  • Experience creating high-fidelity clickable prototypes that are easily consumable by other designers.
  • Experience running usability tests and understanding user behavior.
  • Ability to treat interface text as part of the design, crafting clear and kind button labels, error messages, and feedback.
  • Consideration for accessibility, color contrast, touch-target sizes, device limitations, and network connectivity in designs.
  • Ability to design web apps and learning experiences grounded in cognitive science learning principles.
  • Motivation to be part of a mission-driven organization and empower others.

Nice To Haves

  • Edtech experience, ideally K-12, including understanding of school-issued devices, district IT restrictions, limited training time, school day rhythms, and the difference between demo and real-world performance.
  • Light front-end skills (HTML/CSS/JS literacy) for inspecting builds, tweaking values, and facilitating handoff.
  • Ability to prototype in code.
  • Experience designing for young children with varying reading levels, motor skills, and attention spans.

Responsibilities

  • Refine the end-to-end user experience by mapping user journeys, defining information architecture, and designing intuitive paths.
  • Identify and design solutions for user confusion, rush, or difficulty within the software.
  • Create wireframes and high-fidelity, clickable prototypes to facilitate design debates and validate user flows.
  • Build and maintain a documented design system, including a component library, to ensure consistency and efficient development.
  • Establish design best practices and bring product design efforts in-house to meet user needs.
  • Design interfaces, interactions, and on-screen copy for MCP's software products.
