Product Design Intern

Matic•Menlo Park, CA

About The Position

Matic is developing home robotics, beginning with a floor-cleaning robot that uses real-time 3D mapping, adaptive path-tracking, and semantic understanding of the home. Its robots process data on-device rather than in the cloud. The Product Design Intern will help shape how people experience a robot in their home, working with design and engineering to explore concepts and make the product intuitive, thoughtful, and delightful. The work includes exploring concepts, building prototypes, sharing ideas, and refining interactions using Figma and AI tools. The intern will contribute to meaningful product work while developing design judgment.

Requirements

  • Curiosity about technology and a habit of asking how an experience could be better.
  • Strong foundations in interaction and visual design, including layout, typography, hierarchy, and composition.
  • A portfolio demonstrating thoughtful problem-solving, design craft, and the approach to developing ideas; school, personal, and internship projects are welcome.
  • Comfort working in Figma and enthusiasm for exploring AI tools in the design process.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and explain design decisions.
  • Openness to feedback and willingness to experiment, iterate, and learn.
  • Care for small details and interest in how they contribute to the overall experience.
  • Portfolio required; include the portfolio password if applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building functional prototypes with AI tools or code.
  • Familiarity with motion design or spatial interactions.
  • Understanding of mobile design patterns, accessibility, or design systems.
  • Interest in consumer technology, robotics, and products connecting digital and physical experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Explore and design experiences connecting people, software, and the physical world.
  • Translate complex problems into clear flows, thoughtful interactions, and polished interfaces.
  • Build interactive prototypes with Figma and AI tools to evaluate concepts and communicate design intent.
  • Present design thinking, explore different directions, and refine work through experimentation and team critique.
  • Collaborate with engineers to understand possibilities, work through constraints, and bring ideas into the product.
  • Follow designs through implementation, attending to details that shape the experience.
  • Contribute to a consistent visual and interaction language across Matic’s product experience.
