About The Position

We are seeking a Product Design Engineer to perform structural analysis and design of prestressed and reinforced concrete products. The role involves designing products in accordance with applicable codes, standards, customer specifications, and project requirements. You will evaluate various loading conditions, including wind, ice, equipment, handling, transportation, and erection, applying relevant ASCE load standards. The position also includes occasional support for the analysis and design of steel poles, structures, or components for highway, traffic, lighting, and utility applications, adhering to AASHTO specifications when necessary. Key responsibilities include preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, design documentation, drawings, specifications, and technical submittals. You will also review customer specifications and contract documents to identify design criteria, collaborate with drafting personnel to create production drawings, and provide engineering support to various internal departments such as manufacturing, quality, sales, estimating, and project management. This role involves assisting manufacturing facilities with technical questions and problem-solving, communicating with external stakeholders like customers and state agencies, and participating in product development, design improvement, standardization, cost reduction, and continuous-improvement initiatives. Occasional travel to manufacturing facilities, customer sites, or field locations may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong understanding of engineering mechanics, statics, strength of materials, and structural analysis.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, codes, and technical requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with technical and nontechnical team members.
  • Willingness to learn new products, design methods, software, codes, standards, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to manufacturing facilities and, on occasion, customer or project locations.

  • Experience with prestressed concrete, reinforced concrete, concrete poles, utility structures, transportation structures, lighting structures, or similar engineered products.
  • Familiarity with ASCE 7 and applicable concrete design standards.
  • Experience performing wind-load, flexural, shear, serviceability, stability, handling, transportation, or foundation-related calculations.
  • Knowledge of prestressing methods, reinforcing steel, concrete materials, connections, or embedded components.
  • Experience with structural analysis or finite-element-analysis software.
  • Experience working with concrete or steel manufacturing operations, production drawings, quality requirements, or fabrication processes.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO specifications or structural steel design is beneficial but not required.
  • Experience communicating with customers, consulting engineers, municipalities, state agencies, or departments of transportation.
  • Working knowledge of CAD, engineering calculation software, or document-control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design products in accordance with applicable codes, standards, customer specifications, and project requirements.
  • Evaluate wind, ice, equipment, handling, transportation, erection, and other applicable loading conditions.
  • Apply ASCE 7-16, ASCE 7-22, or equivalent governing load standards as appropriate.
  • Apply applicable concrete design standards, industry requirements, and accepted engineering practices.
  • Occasionally support the analysis and design of steel poles, structures, or components used in highway, traffic, lighting, utility, or similar applications.
  • Support steel design in accordance with applicable AASHTO specifications and other governing standards when required.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, design documentation, drawings, specifications, and technical submittals.
  • Review customer specifications, contract documents, and project requirements to identify applicable design criteria.
  • Work closely with drafting and detailing personnel to translate engineering requirements into accurate production drawings.
  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing, quality, sales, estimating, project management, and other internal departments.
  • Assist manufacturing facilities with technical questions, product issues, nonconforming conditions, and design-related problem-solving.
  • Communicate with customers, consulting engineers, municipalities, state agencies, departments of transportation, and other project stakeholders.
  • Participate in product development, design improvement, standardization, cost reduction, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Visit manufacturing facilities to understand production processes, support problem-solving, and improve product designs.
  • Occasionally travel to customer, project, or field locations as business needs require.
  • Perform other engineering duties consistent with the needs of the department.
