Product Design Engineer, Mechanical Engineering

MetaSunnyvale, CA
$208,000 - $289,000

About The Position

Meta Reality Labs is seeking a Principal Product Design Engineer to drive the mechanical and structural design of next-generation AI-powered smart glasses and wearable devices. In this role, you will define the long-term mechanical architecture for AI glasses and wearables, shaping how millions of people experience AI-enabled wearable computing. You will operate at the intersection of industrial design, systems engineering, and manufacturing, setting the technical direction for complex electromechanical assemblies across the full product lifecycle — from concept through mass production.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of experience in mechanical or product design engineering for consumer electronics, wearable devices, or precision electromechanical systems
  • Experience leading system-level mechanical architecture definition for complex, miniaturized hardware products from concept through mass production
  • Experience with tolerance analysis, structural simulation (FEA), and design validation methodologies for wearable or handheld consumer devices
  • Experience driving cross-functional technical alignment across industrial design, electrical engineering, optics, and manufacturing in a hardware product development environment
  • Experience setting organizational-level engineering standards, design guidelines, or technical roadmaps across multiple product generations

Nice To Haves

  • Track record of filing patents or authoring technical publications in mechanical design, mechanisms, or wearable hardware systems
  • Experience with thermal and structural co-design for compact, body-worn electronic devices with stringent weight and ergonomic constraints
  • Familiarity with advanced manufacturing processes such as injection molding, die casting, CNC machining, and surface finishing as applied to high-volume consumer wearables
  • Experience with optical-mechanical integration, including lens assemblies, camera modules, or precision alignment systems in smart glasses or wearable imaging hardware

Responsibilities

  • Define and own the long-term mechanical architecture strategy for AI glasses and wearable devices, including frame structures, optical assemblies, and miniaturized subsystems
  • Lead cross-functional alignment across industrial design, electrical engineering, optics, and manufacturing engineering to establish system-level mechanical requirements and design constraints
  • Drive concept generation, feasibility analysis, and down-selection for novel mechanical mechanisms, hinge systems, and form-factor innovations in smart glasses and wearables
  • Establish design standards, tolerance stack-up methodologies, and structural analysis frameworks adopted across the broader mechanical engineering organization
  • Partner with supply chain and contract manufacturing teams to define design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly guidelines at scale
  • Lead technical risk identification and mitigation planning for complex electromechanical integrations, including thermal management, sealing, and durability requirements for body-worn devices
  • Provide technical guidance to other engineers on mechanical design decisions, prototype build strategies, and validation approaches for wearable consumer electronics
  • Collaborate with materials science and advanced manufacturing teams to evaluate and qualify novel materials, coatings, and fabrication processes for next-generation AI glasses and wearables
  • Represent mechanical engineering in executive-level design reviews, communicating trade-offs and technical decisions to cross-functional leadership
  • Define and evolve the multi-year mechanical engineering roadmap for AI glasses and wearable hardware, influencing organizational priorities and resource allocation
