About The Position

The Product Cybersecurity Engineer is a senior individual contributor in General Motors’ Secure Product Engineering pillar. Working hands-on with product engineering teams, this role helps ensure software and systems are implemented securely during product development. The engineer builds tooling, reusable patterns, and secure-engineering capabilities, and provides technical guidance and workflows to support security across GM’s product portfolio, including embedded vehicle software, mobile experiences, and other software and services. This is an execution-focused technical role whose influence comes from technical credibility, collaboration, mentorship, and leading by example rather than people management. The selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least three times per week, or at another frequency set by their manager. Relocation benefits are available to candidates who qualify under company policy. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership and influence in relevant security or engineering-focused roles, including contributing without formal authority, mentoring engineers, and helping shape technical direction.
  • Strong experience with application security, secure software engineering, and practical technical guidance.
  • Experience with SAST, DAST, fuzzing, code review, and secure SDLC workflows across platforms.
  • Ability to read and write software in multiple programming languages to build tooling and support team execution.
  • Ability to work closely with engineering teams to materially improve security without unnecessary friction.
  • High-ownership, hands-on approach with product instincts and a pragmatic security mindset.
  • Commitment to internal customer partnership and technically credible security support.
  • Deep technical expertise to provide clear guidance, effective mentorship, and thoughtful technical planning.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex priorities with clear milestones and measurable outcomes.
  • Bias toward scalable improvements that strengthen Secure Product Engineering over time.

  • Published cybersecurity research projects, such as conference talks, blog posts, or code repositories.
  • Familiarity with embedded software or operating-system security, mobile applications, and backend development.
  • Experience building custom security tooling or extending functionality in related technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute hands-on to secure software and systems engineering, driving outcomes through direct execution and influence within engineering teams.
  • Design, build, and mature secure engineering services and capabilities for GM products.
  • Partner closely with product engineering teams and directly contribute to secure implementation.
  • Implement and mature SAST, DAST, fuzzing, runtime security, and operating-system security hardening for core code bases.
  • Author technical guidance, reusable patterns, and guardrails, and support their rollout across product environments.
  • Perform in-depth secure code reviews and partner with adjacent teams to improve tooling and bring security requirements into engineering.
  • Mentor and support engineers across the pillar through example and pairing.
  • Manage multiple complex priorities with clear milestones and measurable outcomes, and pursue scalable improvements to Secure Product Engineering.
