About The Position

The CBC’s parliamentary bureau in Ottawa is looking for two energetic and forward-thinking producers to take on an important editorial role assigned to the program Power & Politics with David Cochrane. Power & Politics is CBC News Network’s daily political show, airing weekdays 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET. The team’s goal is to expand the audience beyond the traditional political realm and outside the program’s daily broadcast. The hours of work will be Monday to Friday 11:00-19:15, but are subject to change due to operational requirements. There are two full time permanent positions available. These positions are on-site.

Requirements

  • A university degree or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working in a national or local newsroom in daily news.
  • A thorough passion for, knowledge and understanding of Canadian politics and its place alongside both American and wider international political issues.
  • Proven journalistic skills in producing and directing accountability interviews with elected leaders & those in positions of power including: Ministers of the Crown, Members of Parliament, Premiers, legislators and municipal leaders.
  • Ability to take initiative, be proactive, and work independently.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and to respond to many competing demands in a short space of time without sacrificing creativity or quality.
  • Proven capacity to problem solve and troubleshoot in fixed time environments.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent production skills including graphics creation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful stories and develop contacts.
  • Understanding of CBC News and the Ottawa Parliamentary Bureau.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to file, online stories and use social media to communicate content.
  • Experience creating digital-only editorial content and working in a cross-media, multi-platform programming environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overtime and weekends, as required.
  • Ability to participate in a highly creative and collaborative team in a dynamic work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and work cooperatively within a small production unit.
  • Mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute significantly to the editorial direction of the show.
  • Produce broadcast and online-specific stories and segments.
  • Repurpose TV material in order to promote and capitalize on significant news and the most influential guests throughout the live two-hour program.

  • Participate in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.
  • Write backgrounders, question lines and segment introductions.
  • Ensure adherence to the style and format of both the program and online platforms.
  • Develop program, online and social media content including writing, researching and/or editing (text, graphics, video).
  • Obtain and organize technical and production resources required by the program.
  • Edit, encode, digitize and package audio and video material for the daily program and a website or social media platform.
  • Assign, direct and coordinate the work of other personnel working on a project for which the producer is responsible.
  • Direct the host.
  • Edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements.
  • Write continuity, re-write or edit text created by others.
  • Assist in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the appropriate technologies.
  • Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.
  • Field production including planning, coordinating and producing off-site interviews and remote broadcasts.
