About The Position

CBC Radio is looking for the next Executive Producer of As It Happens. This is a permanent, on-site, full time role, based in Toronto. Every weekday, As It Happens talks to the people at the centre of the national and international stories that matter most to Canadians. Hosted by Nil Köksal and Chris Howden, the show is here to both inform and delight. It’s been going strong on radio for almost 60 years, and now lives as a successful podcast and a publisher of digital articles as well.

Requirements

  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ professional experience; five must involve work in broadcasting or a closely-related industry, with responsibilities directly relevant to this area of assignment.
  • A university degree or equivalent - journalism preferred.
  • A strong team leader with the ability to motivate and inspire staff while navigating them through change.
  • Demonstrated talent as a programmer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.
  • Superior writing, editorial and production skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of national and international current affairs.
  • Expertise in multi-platform content production.
  • Solid journalistic background in news and current affairs
  • Ability to produce and distribute relevant, audience-focused stories based on feedback and data that adhere to the program’s mandate and CBC News strategy
  • Calm under pressure, able to respond quickly to breaking news stories and deliver under tight deadlines
  • Commitment to reflecting community and diversity in our staffing and our programming
  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of conflict resolution, mentoring, talent growth and development

Responsibilities

  • Establishes a vision and measurable outcomes for programming and ensures the team meets targets.
  • Provides daily direction to the team on expectations around story coverage and development.
  • Works with other programs and departments, including other current affairs shows, news teams, communications, scheduling, etc.
  • Plans, leads and assigns special event coverage.
  • Develops staff by providing mentorship and training opportunities, and gives ongoing feedback through the performance management process; oversees interns.
  • Leads decisions regarding our journalistic policy, and seeks legal expertise if required.
  • Communicates with our audiences, including responding to complaints to the Ombudsman.
