About The Position

The Produce Clerk keeps the Produce Department stocked, clean, organized, and safe during business hours. The role assists customers with purchases, information, and product selection while maintaining a friendly, energetic demeanor and following Produce Department procedures. The clerk supports sales and customer service, product presentation and rotation, accurate tags and pricing, product receiving and inspection, and the department’s cut fruit and vegetable program. The position also contributes to department sales and profitability and maintains strong product knowledge, including preparation, seasonality, and shelf life.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency degree.
Maintain the highest level of customer service.
Ability to adapt to a changing, high-volume retail environment and work in a cross-functional team.
Ability to take initiative when problems arise and adapt to a variety of situations.
Advanced attention to detail and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills for working with peers and senior management.

Ability to work varied hours and days as business dictates.
Familiarity with Health Department guidelines and regulations for grocery retail.
Basic knowledge of math, weights, and measures.
Ability to push and pull fully loaded hand trucks and use box cutters.
Understanding of proper product handling, preparation, seasonality, and shelf life.

Nice To Haves

1–2 years of grocery retail experience in Floral department processes and procedures.
Previous experience in the natural foods industry.

Responsibilities

Keep the produce department, floral area, storage area, and work area clean and safe, including cleaning shelves and products, addressing spills and debris, and sweeping.
Stock and organize produce and floral products; present, rotate, face, and fill merchandise according to department schematics, and ensure tags and pricing are accurate.
Assist customers with purchases, information, and product selection; respond positively to inquiries and sell or cross-sell products.
Receive, inspect, and log products for shipment accuracy, temperature, and quality.
Monitor point-of-purchase signs and maintain recipe cards, product coupons, promotional materials, and information on complementary foods.
Operate equipment such as knives, scales, wrappers, compactors, garbage disposals, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
Participate in pre-inventory preparation, including organizing back stock and checking that tags match products.
Participate in and run the cut fruit and vegetable program.
Take responsibility for department sales and profitability.
Maintain a high level of product knowledge and product preparation knowledge.
Regularly walk the department to maintain an organized, sanitary, and clean appearance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
