About The Position

Thermo Fisher Scientific's internship program is designed to cultivate future leadership talent. As a global organization with diverse business units, functions, and locations, interns must be geographically flexible and mobile for both their assignment and potential future employment. Placement in internships, LDPs, or full-time roles depends on business needs and organizational priorities. This role requires onsite and in-office work as an essential function. The internships are 10-week positions, with start dates on May 24, 2027, or June 14, 2027. Projects assigned will have significant strategic or operating importance. Summer projects may involve supporting Process Safety improvement initiatives, assisting with preparation for risk assessment studies (PHA/HAZOP/LOPA), participating in and documenting these studies, supporting updates to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work instructions, aiding in Process Safety Information (PSI) improvement projects, supporting Management of Change (MOC) projects, assisting with audit corrective actions, developing or improving Process Safety tools, and participating in field walkdowns to understand processes and verify documentation. Interns will also present their project findings and recommendations.

Requirements

Undergraduate student completing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related technical field.
Expected graduation between December 2027 – June 2028.
Previous related internships and / or work experience totaling 1+ years experience required.
Strong Excel, Word, and data-management skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to read, or willingness to learn, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and process flow diagrams (PFDs).
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Interest in process safety, chemical manufacturing, and regulatory compliance.
Proven leadership experience through student organizations, athletics, Greek life, community service, volunteer organizations, campus programs, military service, or other leadership roles.
A track record of influencing others, leading initiatives, driving results, and creating positive impact within teams and organizations.
Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity, adapt to changing priorities, and solve complex problems.
Evidence of grit, resilience, and perseverance when facing challenges, setbacks, or competing priorities.
Strong learning agility, intellectual curiosity, and an innovative mindset.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and emotional intelligence, with the ability to build relationships across diverse teams.

Onsite and in-office work is an essential function of this role and is required throughout the program and in future placements to support collaboration across businesses, functions, and locations.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require sponsorship (current or future) for employment visa status.
Not eligible for employment visa status for the purpose of obtaining practical experience (F-1, J-1, H-1, OPT, and CPT Visas).

Nice To Haves

Chemical Engineering would be preferred.
PowerBI skills would be advantageous.
Previous exposure to PSM, RMP, HAZOP/LOPA, or MOC would be a plus, but is not required.

Responsibilities

Support specific Process Safety improvement projects and action closures under the direction of the Process Safety Program Manager.
Assist with preparation for PHA/HAZOP/LOPA studies, including gathering and organizing P&IDs, procedures, process information, previous studies, and other required documentation.
Participate in PHA/HAZOP sessions as appropriate and assist with documentation and follow-up of recommendations.
Support SOP and work-instruction improvement projects, including comparison of procedures against current process documentation and identification of items requiring update.
Assist with Process Safety Information (PSI) improvement projects, such as reconciliation of P&IDs, PFDs, equipment information, SDSs, and other technical documentation.
Support selected MOC projects, including organization of supporting documentation and follow-up of identified procedure, PSI, and training updates.
Assist with specific audit corrective-action projects, including collection and organization of supporting evidence.
Support development or improvement of Process Safety tools, templates, trackers, and dashboards.
Participate in field walkdowns with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, and EHS to become familiar with chemical processes and verify documentation as part of assigned projects.
Present the results and recommendations from assigned projects to the Process Safety team and relevant stakeholders.
