About The Position

This internship is for an occupational safety student passionate about reducing workplace hazards and creating a healthier environment in a modern food manufacturing setting. The Sargento Cheese Safety, Security and Risk Internship offers hands-on experience applying safety, security, and health principles, including industrial hygiene, ergonomics, incident investigation, safety program management, lockout/tagout, confined space, and other key safety programs. The role is ideal for someone enthusiastic, creative, analytical, collaborative, and goal-driven, seeking to strengthen communication skills, think creatively, and build real-world safety knowledge in a collaborative environment.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, security and risk or other related field, having completed junior year prior to the start of internship.
  • Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions from applicable safety standards is required.
  • Must also be able to converse with other employees in a manner befitting company standards and cultural norms.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
  • Maintain confidentiality with respect to Sargento Cheese proprietary information.
  • Valid driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and vehicle required.

Responsibilities

  • Participate and lead Incident Root Cause Analysis Events.
  • Develop new Safety Observations and Audits templates.
  • Conduct trending analysis of incidents, near-misses and good catch events.
  • Present findings to management while providing guidance on methods to reduce or eliminate risk.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests for new equipment / assess for hazards.
  • Aid in the development of Lock Out Tag Out procedures, provide insight to streamline training processes.
  • Assist in overall monitoring with health and safety regulations (OSHA).
  • Help coordinate and track EHS training programs.
  • Assist with projects that enhance workplace safety culture and reduce risk.
  • Support safety committee initiatives and activities.
  • Assist with site audits, Food Defense audits and security tasks.
  • Create standard operating procedures and visual indicators to make implementation of changes successful.
  • Gain familiarity with production processes and periodically participate in production activities.
  • Assist with completion of Job Safety Analysis and other standard work.
  • Conduct noise assessments or other industrial hygiene activities as needed.
  • Participate in Process Safety Management Activities such as Compliance Audits, Process Hazard Analysis or incident investigations as applicable.
