About The Position

This internship focuses on supporting health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs within a multi-plant setting in the USA, with a primary focus on operations in Dunlap, TN. Opportunities for training events in Michigan and other locations may arise. The role involves assisting in the identification, planning, development, and implementation of HSE programs to ensure compliance with regulations. The intern will support various functions, including disaster planning, environmental management systems (EMS) aligned with ISO14001, emergency response plans, and plant safety activities. A key aspect of the role is understanding and assisting with environmental legal requirements, waste disposal methods, and record maintenance. The intern will also support the achievement of environmental objectives and targets within the EMS, coordinate HSE-related training, and ensure accurate record-keeping for OSHA and EMS. Identifying and correcting potential HSE issues, participating in safety committees, and enhancing HSE communications are also core responsibilities. The position requires performing all activities in a positive and professional manner.

Requirements

  • Able to intern from 20-29 hours a week (flexible scheduling allowed)
  • Able to use digital tools (i.e. Microsoft Office with emphasis in Excel, PowerBI, etc)
  • Able present in front of leadership staff.

Responsibilities

  • Support activities to identify, plan, develop and implement a health, safety and environmental program ensuring compliance with local, state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Assist functions in HSE problem identification and solution implementation.
  • Assist with preparation, training and implementation of disaster planning.
  • Assist the Environmental Management Representative to coordinate EMS to comply with 1SO14001 standards and maintain 3rd party registration.
  • Coordinates emergency response plans.
  • Assist with plant safety activities including coordination of the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Comprehend and assist with environmental legal requirements and other safety and environmental requirements to which the plants subscribe and applicable to the plants.
  • Support the Environmental Management System by understanding reports required by the government, assisting with maintenance of summary data and information on liquid and solid waste, air emissions, and other key environmental performance measurable results.
  • Understand the appropriate disposal methods for all waste at the plant.
  • Assist with maintaining environmental records as required.
  • Assist the EMS Manual maintenance process.
  • Support the Achievement of environment objectives and targets with the EMS.
  • Coordinate, monitor and facilitate training related to health, safety, and environment areas consistent with the facility mission, direction, goals; customer requirements and regulatory compliance.
  • Understand accurate and timely OSHA and EMS record requirements.
  • Identify and correct potential health, safety and environmental issues.
  • Participate with various safety committee(s).
  • Enhance HSE Communications.
  • Performs activities in a positive and professional manner.
