Located approximately 50 miles northeast of Safford, Arizona on U.S. Highway 191, Morenci operations (an open-pit copper mining complex) has been in continuous operation since 1939. The operation consists of two concentrators, crushed-ore leach pad and stacking system, a low-grade run-of-mine (ROM) leaching system; four SX plants; and three EW tank houses that produce copper cathode. Requirements

  • Three (3) years of related operational experience, including supervisory or lead experience.
  • Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required aptitude.
  • The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills while also passing a written assessment where required. This exam is based on skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge; as well as safety.
  • Skilled in the operation and principals of hydrometallurgical process
  • Knowledge of operations areas, policies, processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques
  • Skill in resolving day-to-day questions/problems regarding equipment, materials methods and procedures needed to complete projects
  • Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Skill in following safety practices, recognizing and controlling hazards
  • Skill in the use of computers
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Additional certifications or licensure apporpriate to the job may be required
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
  • Candidates may be required to pass a medical exam.
  • Candidates must pass all required training and/or testing.
  • Employees may be required to work a non-standard schedule, which may include shift work (other than day shift) at a 24/7, 365-day operation.

Responsibilities

  • Provides on-going support for completion of daily production/operation plan by assisting area supervisors.
  • Performs as safety contact and executes safety audits, investigations and resolves safety issues/concerns through collaboration with site’s Safety Department.
  • Reviews routine and non-routine chemical or metallurgical analysis and reporting.
  • Communicates with operators to ensure equipment is operating properly.
  • Operates equipment as necessary.
  • Monitors a wide variety of data gathering equipment.
  • Assigns operators to the areas per the supervisor’s instruction.
  • Follows up to ensure supervisor expectations are being met.
  • Provides mentoring/coaching through collaboration with processing departments and support groups.
  • Assists in completion of production plans with direction from the area supervisor, coordinates and plans/implements equipment operation and production improvements.
  • Completes shift report for distribution to leadership.
  • Works on special projects as required by leadership.
  • Participates in a variety of audits (e.g. grating, fatal risks, MSHA, safety, environmental).
  • Provides feedback to department supervision and training on proper procedures to operations (e.g. process operations, equipment operation, safety procedures).
  • Observes employees to determine if they are complying with safety and environmental requirements.
  • Ensures housekeeping is maintained in all areas.
  • Ensures operators are following the supervisor’s instructions.
  • Checks the areas for hazards and follows up on corrective action.
  • Assists in troubleshooting process performance and quality issues (e.g. equipment availability, downtime etc.) and working with support groups to resolve them.
  • Meets with area supervisors during each shift to provide feedback on activities in their areas as well as receiving supervisor instructions and reviewing the area production plan.
  • Discusses operator assignments and training.
  • Notifies maintenance when there is an equipment breakdown and follows up on the repair status.
  • Collaborates with operations and maintenance groups to identify and address safety concerns identified in area inspections and audits.
  • Performs as relief or fill-in supervisor.
  • Performs occasional operation of processing area equipment. (E.g., Stripping Machine, overhead crane, small mobile equipment, etc.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Assists supervisors with investigations and Root Cause Analyses (RCA) for production, environmental and safety events.
  • Initiates investigations, including securing scene of events for proper review, collecting relevant information and gathering applicable data.
