About The Position

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) is a leading marine defense contractor known for its reliable power systems, parts, and aftermarket services to various naval entities. Federal Equipment Company, now part of FMD, specializes in marine deck machinery and weapons/material handling systems and is experiencing rapid growth. This on-site Co-Op position is for 3-4 months, supporting continuous improvement initiatives in operations by enhancing efficiency, optimizing workflows, and improving production processes. Requirements

  • Enrolled in a degree program in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, Supply Chain, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • Must work on-site during the co-op term.
  • Must provide proof of US Citizenship and attest that you do not have dual citizenship (US Passport, US Birth Certificate or Naturalization Certificate accepted) due to NOFORN requirement for access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with CAD or similar tools is a plus.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, visual management, and process improvement principles is preferred.
  • A proactive, adaptable mindset and eagerness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Support process optimization for workflows, production layouts, and material handling.
  • Develop and implement visual management tools to improve organization and communication.
  • Assist in creating and improving systems for kit drop-off areas, WIP lanes, Kanban processes, and NCR isolation zones.
  • Collaborate with operations, production, and supply chain teams to align project goals.
  • Analyze data to identify inefficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Participate in hands-on activities to implement continuous improvement projects.
