About The Position

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) is a leading marine defense contractor known for its rapid and effective support of naval fleets. The Federal Equipment Company (FEC), now part of FMD, is a growing supplier of marine deck machinery and specialized weapons and material handling systems. This on-site co-op position is for 3-4 months, supporting continuous improvement initiatives in operations. The role involves enhancing efficiency, optimizing workflows, and improving production processes, requiring the candidate to embody FMD's core values of Integrity, Velocity, and Teamwork in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a degree program in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, Supply Chain, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • A proactive, adaptable mindset and eagerness to learn.
  • Must work on-site during the co-op term.
  • Must provide proof of US Citizenship and attest that you do not have dual citizenship (US Passport, US Birth Certificate or Naturalization Certificate accepted).
  • Ability to competently perform all the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to effective customer service delivery.
  • Ability to work productively as a member of a team or work group.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with CAD or similar tools is a plus.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, visual management, and process improvement principles is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support process optimization for workflows, production layouts, and material handling.
  • Develop and implement visual management tools to improve organization and communication.
  • Assist in creating and improving systems for kit drop-off areas, WIP lanes, Kanban processes, and NCR isolation zones.
  • Collaborate with operations, production, and supply chain teams to align project goals.
  • Analyze data to identify inefficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Participate in hands-on activities to implement continuous improvement projects.
  • Demonstrate FMD’s core values: Integrity, Velocity, and Teamwork.
