Process Engineers at New-Indy Ontario rotate through major departments—including Production/Paper Machine, Stock Prep, Maintenance, and Power & Utilities—as well as a box plant, with the rotation ending in a Shift Supervisor role within the first 2–3 years of employment. Rotations generally last 6 months to 1 year, depending on business staffing needs. This experience is intended to build broad mill knowledge and develop well-rounded Process Engineers. In Power & Utilities, the engineer works with power and utilities, environmental and production managers, shift supervisors, and operators on projects to increase production, improve quality and reliability, and reduce costs. The engineer also develops operator interfaces and procedures, supports instrumentation and process-control maintenance projects, and assists with shutdown jobs. In Production/Paper Machine, the engineer provides technical support to optimize performance, production efficiency, product quality, and process reliability; troubleshoots technical issues; supports day-to-day technical department activities and environmental and safety compliance, including wastewater treatment plant operations; identifies root causes and implements solutions; participates in trials; and supports accurate data collection, processing, auditing, and interpretation. In Maintenance, the engineer designs and develops projects, analyzes data and results, identifies solutions to emerging problems, and modifies designs to meet requirements. In Stock Prep, the engineer helps maintain pulping equipment and systems for efficiency, leads continuous-improvement projects, coordinates maintenance priorities and preventive maintenance, and ensures equipment-care rounds and operator maintenance are completed.
