About The Position

The Process Engineer - Sulphur Recovery is responsible for providing daily technical process engineering support and guidance to ensure their process units are operated in a safe, environmentally sound, reliable, and profitable manner, adhering to the license to operate and the defined safe operating envelope. This role works closely with the Production Specialist in their assigned unit to resolve issues and identify opportunities, focusing primarily on a 90-day outlook for medium to long-term unit challenges and improvements. A portion of the role also involves supporting 24/7 shift operations to address immediate threats to the business plan.

Requirements

  • Legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA or eligible for registration.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in refining/upgrading/chemical plant technology.
  • BS ChE degree (or equivalent).
  • Good knowledge in Sulphur processing, hydro processing, crude, conversion technologies.
  • Working knowledge of process control systems and theory.
  • Knowledge of corrosion mechanisms as they apply to the processes being supported and of the materials, process controls, and methods to mitigate those mechanisms.
  • Strong technical skills and ability to perform in-depth problem solving.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency in use of spreadsheets, computers, and simulation models.

Responsibilities

  • Review shift logs and shift plans in preparation for the Technical Support Huddle.
  • Lead weekly alarm meetings and support alarm management activities.
  • Own proactive technical monitoring of the designated process unit against safe operating envelope and License to Operate (LTO) limits, documenting performance through monthly and quarterly KPI reports.
  • Implement and utilize the adopted monitoring standard for the site in collaboration with Contact Engineers (CEs) and Technical Senior Engineers (TSEs).
  • Provide monthly, quarterly, and annual input for production accounting and regulatory reporting (e.g., yield reporting, flaring, chemical costs).
  • Own the alarm database for the units.
  • Identify and communicate threats to process safety, license to operate limits, and production targets to technical, production, and maintenance teams.
  • Utilize fact-based root cause analysis to investigate, define, and troubleshoot threats.
  • Assist in ensuring solutions to problems are technically sound.
  • Identify opportunities to improve unit safety, environmental performance, reliability, and profitability, developing them as resources allow or escalating for additional resources.
  • Provide process engineering support for operating problems or seek support where appropriate.
  • Act as MOC unit expert/idea approver and process engineer/discipline reviewer.
  • Serve as MOC focal for short-term changes (e.g., temporary repairs or impairments) or small project changes.
  • Review Operations Procedures from a Professional Engineer perspective and provide P.Eng stamping as required.
  • Coach and mentor junior staff to develop the site Process Engineering skill pool.
  • Provide coverage for events such as unit upsets, start-ups, shutdowns, and Turnarounds, with off-hours call-out support if required.
