About The Position

The Hamilton County Juvenile Court is seeking a Probation Officer to join their team. This role involves investigating cases, assessing youth and families, providing supervision, and utilizing best practice models to address criminogenic factors. The Probation Officer will maintain case documentation, stay knowledgeable about court and community resources, and attend required training. This position also involves performing duties of the Duty Officer for the Probation Department's intake process and potentially providing customer service support or direct care monitoring of youth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work or related field or a combination of Bachelor's degree in any field and 2 years of paid related case management experience
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess auto liability insurance.
  • Use of personal automobile is required to perform field activities.
  • Must pass a background screening process.
  • Must possess analytical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to assess situation, seek multiple perspectives and, if necessary, gather more information to arrive at an appropriate solution.
  • Must possess clerical/administrative skills/abilities, which include: Ability to prepare related reports as required; Ability perform drug testing in a safe and secure manner.
  • Must possess computer/technical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to use personal computers and other office machines in order to prepare related reports as required.
  • Must possess project/process management skills/abilities, which include: Strong organizational, prioritizing and problem-solving skills.
  • Must possess written and oral communication skills/abilities, which include: Ability to communicate with individuals of varying intellectual, emotional and physical abilities; Ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to client information and records.
  • Must possess physical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to operate handcuffs, shackles, and physically arrest youth and/or adults as needed and in a safe and secure manner.
  • Must possess knowledge of case management practices and the court system.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work or related field and prior training and/or experience working with gender specific, mental health, or sex offender population.
  • Professional certifications that are preferred include: LSW, LISW, LPC, LPCC, and/or LCDCIII

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the investigation of cases referred to the Probation Department by the Court.
  • Collects all appropriate background check information available on assigned youth and families for assessment utilizing the resources of the Probation Department and the Court.
  • Completes risk assessments, coordinates substance abuse and psychological evaluations, develops dispositional recommendations in accordance with departmental policy, and presents written/verbal summaries to the Court.
  • Provides supervision of youth on probation according to assigned caseload (i.e. General, Gender Specific, Mental Health, and youth in Placement Facilities or Sex Offenders).
  • Monitors progress of established case supervision plans utilizing resources of the Probation Department and the Court, conducts visits to homes, schools, etc., maintains contact with social service and law enforcement agencies as needed, signs complaints.
  • Utilizes best practice models sanctioned by the department, such as EPICS (Effective Practices in Community Supervision) and/or Carey Guides and BITS (Brief Intervention Tools) to address criminogenic factors that impact recidivism. Engages clients, teaches problem solving skills, and provides evidence-based interventions and assign homework directed towards successful outcomes for youth.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of IV-E and Reclaim requirements associated with case management and ensures the requirements are met as established by Departmental policy and State statutes.
  • Prepares and maintains all case documentation, reports and materials within prescribed timeframes.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the caseload practices of the Probation Department in order to assume specialized cases at any time.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of Court and community resources with the ability to make appropriate referrals to same.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the principles of evidence based practices endorsed by the Department and the Court.
  • Attends required training.
  • Performs the duties of the Duty Officer for the Probation Department's intake process.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as administratively assigned, including, but not limited to, providing customer service support and/or direct care monitoring of youth in various court departments and buildings on a temporary, as-needed and/or rotation basis.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
