About The Position

Under general supervision, performs professional duties ranging from moderate to difficult in providing correctional casework services to assigned individuals under probation supervision at the direction of the superior court. Establishes and maintains a positive and healthy work environment. The Coconino County Adult Probation Department's mission is to create a safer community by reducing the number of future crimes and victims through individualized programming and supervision. This includes cognitive-behavioral education, treatment, restorative justice, community involvement, effective supervision methods, and measurable outcomes. The Coconino County Pretrial Mission is to maximize Court appearance, public safety, and effective release practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a preference for a major or minor in the Behavioral Sciences (Supreme Court Order 73-1 TR-ADM-PROB) and two years of progressively responsible experience as a probation officer; OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Must obtain an Arizona driver’s license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal history check relevant to employment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of probation services, treatment planning, and Court reports.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles of human behavior.
  • Considerable knowledge of the criminal justice system (Adult), the Juvenile Justice System (Juvenile), and community resources.
  • Considerable knowledge of search, transportation, and restraint procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of practices and techniques of individual and group counseling and casework methods.
  • Skill in personal interaction, counseling, and interviewing.
  • Skill in the use of computers.
  • Skill in attention to detail.
  • Skill in prioritization.
  • Skill in task management.
  • Ability to effectively analyze individuals and situations and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to apply the methods and principles of probation services.
  • Ability to work alone in remote areas.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain complex records and reports.
  • Ability to make sound casework decisions independently and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work safely and support the culture of workplace safety.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, clients, other agencies, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Performs social investigations and evaluations of assigned defendants, including interviews with relatives, social agencies, and employers; prepares required reports and assessments and makes recommendations to the Court.
  • Advises and supervises individuals on probation as ordered by the Court to enforce compliance with court directives.
  • Develops and implements client-based programs and refers clients/individuals under supervision for placement in needed services.
  • Appears and testifies in court.
  • Builds positive working relationships with individuals under supervision.
  • Conducts visits with individuals at the office, their residence, and at various sites.
  • May perform searches, urinalysis collection, and make employment contacts.
  • May make arrests and provide crisis intervention.
  • Enters data and provides statistical data for computer-based management.
  • Maintains written and computerized records, runs reports, and verifies statistics with central records.
  • Tracks client payments.
  • Consults with attorneys and works with victims and community agencies.
  • May transport individuals under supervision.
  • May counsel individuals under supervision.
  • Works in partnership with the community for input, planning, and accountability (Restorative Justice).
  • Trains other officers.
  • Makes most case decisions independently.
