About The Position

Under general supervision, performs professional duties ranging from moderate to difficult in providing correctional casework services to assigned individuals under probation supervision at the direction of the superior court. This role involves establishing and maintaining a positive and healthy work environment. Positions are available for Pre-trial, Pre-sentence, and Field Office roles in our Flagstaff location. The Coconino County Adult Probation Department's mission is to create a safer community by reducing future crimes and victims through individualized programming and supervision, including Cognitive-Behavioral education, treatment, restorative justice, community involvement, effective supervision methods, and measurable outcomes. The Coconino County Pretrial Mission is to maximize Court appearance, public safety, and effective release practices.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States citizen or legal resident.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and/or obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Have a bachelor's degree with a preference in the behavioral sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years progressively responsible experience as a probation officer.
  • OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Be a minimum age of twenty-one (21) years.
  • Complete background/reference checks, interviews, polygraph and/or drug testing, and pre-employment psychological examinations.
  • Must successfully complete 40-hour Defensive Tactics Training Academy as soon as practical, but no later than 120 days from the date of employment.
  • Must demonstrate, by proficiency testing, competency and understanding of the physical and verbal techniques and tactics presented at the Defensive Tactics Training Academy.
  • Must successfully complete eight (8) hours of defensive tactics refresher training on an annual basis.
  • Must maintain certificate of successful completion of defensive tactics training.
  • Must successfully complete the Probation Certification Academy and Intensive Probation Institute, if assigned, within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must submit to a medical examination required by Corrections Officer Retirement Plan.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of probation services, treatment planning, and Court reports.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles of human behavior.
  • Considerable knowledge of the criminal justice system (Adult), the Juvenile Justice System (Juvenile), and community resources.
  • Considerable knowledge of search, transportation and restraint procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of practices and techniques of individual and group counseling and casework methods.
  • Skill in personal interaction, counseling and interviewing.
  • Skill in the use of computers.
  • Ability to effectively analyze individuals and situations and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to apply the methods and principles of probation services.
  • Ability to work alone in remote areas.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain complex records and reports.
  • Ability to make sound casework decisions independently and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work safely and support the culture of workplace safety.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, clients, other agencies and the public.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Performs social investigations and evaluations of assigned offenders, including interviews with relatives, social agencies, and employers; prepares reports and assessments; makes recommendations to the Court.
  • Advises and supervises offenders as ordered by the Court to enforce compliance with court directives.
  • Develops and implements client-based programs and refers offenders for needed services.
  • Appears and testifies in court.
  • Builds positive working relationships with offenders.
  • Conducts visits with offenders at the office and various sites.
  • May perform searches, urinalysis collection, make employment contacts, make arrests, and provide crisis intervention.
  • Enters data and provides statistical data for computer-based management.
  • Maintains written and computerized records, runs reports, and verifies statistics with central records.
  • Keeps track of client payments.
  • Consults with attorneys and works with victims and community agencies.
  • May transport offenders.
  • May counsel offenders.
  • Works in partnership with the community for input, planning, and accountability (Restorative Justice).
  • Trains other officers.
  • Makes most case decisions independently.
