About The Position

The Teaching Assistant works out of the Oregon State Penitentiary and manages and facilitates computer-based and paper assessments at the three Salem-area prisons and provides instructional assistance in the GED study labs. Travel between the facilities is required. Requirements

  • Equivalency of two (2) years of full-time work experience that reflects the knowledge, skills and experience to perform the essential functions listed above.
  • Associate’s Degree or two (2) years of full-time work experience which reflects the knowledge, skills and experience to perform the essential functions listed above.

  • Ability to work with participants of various ages, backgrounds, and abilities
  • Bicultural/multicultural skills sufficient to select appropriate behaviors, values and attitudes within different cultures during interactions with others.

  • CASAS Implementation and Appraisal Training
  • Experience using Pearson Vue’s testing system

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates student access to GED computer lab involving training on the functions of the computers
  • Assists faculty and staff on computer use
  • Mentors students on using GED study lab software
  • Explains and how to complete automated testing processes and proctors exams
  • Oversees maintenance and setup of equipment and/or procedures for instructional lab
  • Manually downloads Pearson Vue tests; uploads and downloads them to/from the student networks; ensures appropriate tests are ready for students
  • Works closely with Pearson Vue and Oregon Department of Corrections IT departments to troubleshoot any problems
  • Meets all scheduled testing and computer lab sessions; collaborates with appropriate faculty to ensure adequate coverage
  • Determines and administers CASAS and Best Plus tests under the direction of program staff
  • Explains testing requirements to new students, including those who desire to opt out.
  • Explains the consequences of opting out and explain the benefits of a GED
  • Verifies attendance of students
  • Prepares and maintains student records and keeps staff informed of students’ progress
  • Adheres to all Department of Corrections (DOC) policies and procedures, including progressive discipline with students.
  • Offers suggestions on system improvements
  • Provides assistance in the operational duties of the education area and back-up to other department staff
  • Participates in relevant training, including college and DOC sponsored professional development activities and updates on computer programs
  • Participates in program planning
  • Understands and abides college and Oregon Department of Corrections policies and regulations
  • Maintains a DOC contractor credential and completes all necessary trainings.
  • Embraces diversity and actively collaborates effectively with a variety of students, staff and the public from diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds
  • Participates in recruitment and retention of students at an individual and institutional level in promotion of student success
  • Embraces, understands and uses appropriate technology tools to accomplish job functions
