About The Position

McKesson Technology (MT) has an Enterprise Portfolio Management Office (EPMO) which is a centralized function to 1) enable consistent portfolio management 2) build and mature project and program management capabilities and 3) drive project management rigor and standards to enable value realization from investments. The Principal Technology Portfolio Management Leader will be a key member of the EPMO team. The individual will be responsible for serving as a portfolio lead supporting USPD business. The individual in this role will need to be able to operate within a high level of ambiguity, remain calm under pressure and help establish structure and focus.

Requirements

  • Typically requires 13 + years of experience.
  • Requires at least 8+ years of program and/or portfolio management experience.
  • Requires at least 5+ years of experience within a technology focused area (Digital Transformation, IT Infrastructure, Cloud Modernization, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating regularly with VPs, SVPs, and C-suite executives, supported by a background in consulting.
  • Exceptional executive presentation, communication, and influence management skills.
  • Experience managing large portfolios and ensuring strategic alignment and prioritization, as well as overseeing investments and value realization—ideally within the technology sector, though a background in general technology combined with business portfolio management is also suitable.
  • Experience delivering results by collaborating and influencing business and technology delivery teams in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Proven stakeholder management skills & building credibility with executive leadership.
  • Ability to intentionally flex between strategy and detail and adapt style to different levels of the organization.
  • Experience driving organizational transformation and change management.
  • Ability to make complex concepts simple and convey it laymen’s terms.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish collaborative relationships and move with speed while bringing people along.
  • High degree of emotional maturity and ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.

  • Experience managing technology portfolio for a business unit is high desirable.
  • Experience working in large matrixed organizations is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with portfolio tools (Planview, Clarity PPM, etc.) is desirable.
  • Experience in a highly regulated industry is desirable.
  • Certification(s) in SAFe Agile, Prince2 / APM, PMP and/or Lean Six Sigma desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the intake, prioritization, and sequencing of portfolio initiatives with cross-functional partners to ensure alignment with business strategy and maximize business outcomes.
  • Monitor and track portfolio health by evaluating execution progress, interdependencies, risks, and capacity constraints, proactively recommending sequencing and highlighting issues to enable successful delivery and value realization.
  • Drive connectivity and collaboration across delivery teams, Finance, and portfolio leads, influencing decisions that support achievement of business goals.
  • Enable visibility into capacity constraints and facilitate alignment of priorities and trade-offs, ensuring resources are allocated to the most valuable initiatives.
  • Establish and lead regular portfolio reviews with stakeholders and executive leadership, providing clear reporting on progress, financials, risks, lessons learned, and business impacts to inform decision-making.
  • Drive annual budget planning with Finance, review baseline financials and investment budgets for initiatives, and collaborate with service managers to guide resource allocation and strategic decisions.
  • Champion data-driven analysis and actionable insights, connecting project and technology spend to business value, and recommending trade-offs, course corrections, or project terminations as needed.
  • Maintain portfolio governance and data integrity, ensure projects adhere to established frameworks, complete necessary lifecycle work, and have approved change requests for budget or schedule deviations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, ensuring their needs and expectations are met through effective communication and delivery of portfolio information.
  • Partner with Finance and embed benefits realization and value tracking into portfolio management by defining clear success metrics upfront, monitoring benefits during and after implementation, and reporting on KPI improvements, cost savings, and revenue growth.
  • Promote transparency and alignment by providing stakeholders with visibility into how initiatives support strategic objectives, enabling informed prioritization and optimization of the portfolio’s cost/benefit mix.
  • Support dynamic portfolio rebalancing, adapting to changes in business, financial, or capacity conditions to protect core operations while enabling innovation.
  • Partner with Finance for ongoing financial forecasting, trend analysis, and investment mix reviews, ensuring high-value opportunities are funded and low-value projects are deprioritized.
  • Anchor portfolio decisions in enterprise architecture, preventing proliferation of non-strategic platforms and ensuring alignment with target state architecture.
  • Champion holistic performance and risk management, presenting portfolio health in business terms and elevating discussions from project status to business impact.
