Principal Software Engineer
About The Position
Arboreal Management is seeking an exceptional software engineer to be the senior technical builder on a small, ambitious internal software team. The company is a property management firm aiming to revolutionize the industry, having grown to manage over 9,000 homes in four years. They achieve this by combining excellent resident and client care with rapid technology development. Their proprietary software platform, Maynard, is integral to operations, covering leasing, property operations, communications, maintenance, document processing, and reporting, and increasingly incorporates AI-enabled workflows. The company prioritizes speed and impact, not building a large engineering organization.
Requirements
- Excellent software engineer with a desire for substantially more ownership
- Experience building and operating real production systems
- Developed strong opinions about what makes software reliable, maintainable, and understandable
- Comfortable working across the full stack (frontend, backend, infrastructure, data, AI)
- Excited about working directly with a highly involved CEO
- Ability to take an idea and run with it
- Willingness to push back on technical paths when necessary
- Ownership of the quality of production code
- Strong opinions, low ego, and a bias toward building
- Extensive use of AI in personal development workflow
- Excited about how a small team can build and operate systems previously requiring a larger organization
Nice To Haves
- Experience with the exact stack (JavaScript/Node.js, SvelteKit, Postgres, Azure, Cloudflare, AI models/services) is not required, but strong engineers learn tools.
Responsibilities
- Design and build major parts of Maynard
- Own architecture for technically difficult or high-risk systems
- Turn rough product concepts and prototypes into reliable production software
- Make pragmatic decisions about where engineering rigor is needed versus where to move fast
- Establish sensible standards around testing, deployment, observability, security, and reliability
- Review and improve existing systems as Maynard grows
- Work closely with the Product Engineer supporting internal users
- Use modern AI development tools aggressively to increase engineering velocity
- Continue writing a lot of code
